Manager, Large Animal Veterinary Assistants

The University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications for the position of Manager, Large Animal Veterinary Assistants.  The primary purpose of this position is to manage the Veterinary Assistants of the Large Animal Clinical Sciences Department and to ensure facility compliance with all safety and management regulations for governing agencies and accrediting organizations. Responsibilities include oversight, training, scheduling, disciplining, and completing annual performance reviews for staff; preparing a yearly USDA report; preparing monthly research billing for the department; evaluating work- related safety issues and providing necessary information, equipment, and personnel to maintain a safe work environment; ensuring the hospital and related department areas are kept organized and maintained through coordination with the maintenance, housekeeping, and vet assistant staff; providing inventory control and upkeep on hospital equipment; and developing and implementing standards operating procedures (SOP’s) regarding clinic safety, facility cleaning, and infectious disease control and prevention.

FACILITY:

Oversees general upkeep of hospital and VREC areas not covered by housekeeping and maintenance, ensuring the hospital and VREC are clean and organized. Communicates with the Housekeeping and Maintenance services concerning areas needing attention.  Conducts regular inspections to assess needs. Ensures maintenance of areas outside the hospital building, such as the large animal unloading area as they pertain to the large animal hospital and VREC, keeping the area neat and organized. Ensures the department’s compliance with requirements for OSHA, and any accrediting organizations to whom the department reports (this pertains to hospital, teaching and research areas concerning facility maintenance, animal housing and record keeping). Closely works with research and teaching staff and participates in accreditation inspections. Performs maintenance and troubleshooting on equipment. Orders hospital supplies and provides inventory control for those items.  Schedules and carries out routine cleaning projects and improvements (in conjunction with the veterinary assistants) and maintenance beyond daily duties. Assists with or fully completes the large animal hospital’s annual inventories of equipment, chemicals, and facility space. Makes recommendations concerning facility organization of new or updated areas. Assists staff with career path. Prepares specifications for equipment and products used at VREC and the Large Animal Hospital and is the contact person for vendors. 

SUPERVISION:

Coordinates large animal veterinary assistants’ job tasks as needed with veterinary technicians or clinicians. Oversees, approves and submits time sheets and leave requests for the Large Animal Veterinary Assistants.  Oversees hiring, training, and scheduling of new employees, including student workers, and completes needed paperwork. Directs decision-making and disciplinary action processes regarding Large Animal Veterinary Assistants. Conducts performance evaluations/reviews of the Large Animal Veterinary Assistants and handles termination procedures if necessary.

SAFETY:

Communicates with Maintenance staff regarding OSHA/TOSHA hoist inspections.  Provides job safety materials and equipment, addressing and making recommendations to prevent unsafe conditions within the department, and overseeing the department’s disposal of hazardous waste. Assists in disease control and prevention in the animal care areas. Identifies and remedies safety hazards in the clinic and surrounding areas.  Assists supervisors with paperwork for worker’s compensation claims or other incident reports.  Oversees facilities improvement projects at the Large Animal hospital and VREC as it relates to Large Animal.

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or equivalent. 5 to 8 years of relevant experience in a veterinary clinic, research facility, or other animal-related field. Must have a working knowledge of heavy equipment (examples include farm tractor, skid steer loader, lawn mowers, bushhogs-drags, etc.)  Must have experience managing others in an animal care facility.

Preferred Qualifications:

Prior managerial or supervisory experience in a clinical, research, or teaching environment. Experience in inventory management and purchasing. Experience with Microsoft Office applications (primarily Word and Excel). Working knowledge of a farm and hospital.
