JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut is actively recruiting a Financial Assistant/financial services professional to join our Animal Care Services (“ACS”) Team. Animal Care Services provides animal husbandry and veterinary care for vertebrate animals housed at the Storrs Campus and manages animal care activities and facilities for research projects. The Financial Assistant will be responsible for the accounting and bookkeeping functions for the Animal Care Services unit, which will include working independently to coordinate all related financial activities.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Maintains and monitors financial records and accounts for all ACS sub-units. Works collaboratively with Office of the Vice President for Research (OVPR) financial personnel to provide information related to budgetary matters.Assists departmental staff in understanding and following procedures and processes related to the purchasing and procurement of goods and travel services.Processes and monitors all ACS unit financial transactions in accordance with University and State requirements, generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), and best practices.Processes animal per diem billings; provides ACS customer support and performs other financial and administrative tasks including processing payroll transactions, verifying and processing purchasing receipts and invoices, etc.Works with senior ACS staff on the expeditious procurement of capital and non-capital expenditures including new equipment, renovations, caging/supplies, and preventive maintenance programs/service.Works collaboratively with the Director of ACS and OVPR financial services personnel to develop and implement procedures related to animal per diems and other cost-accounting areas to provide more specific and accurate data on the calculation of time, labor, and costs associated with department and animal care related activities. Researches and works collaboratively with other units to identify and implement financial and inventory systems to replace the bioOARs legacy system, automate animal census, track animal protocols, animal orders, animal health reports, quantify expenses, and process billing.Prepares monthly financial statements for animal census projections, purchase history, historical data on cost areas, and other relevant information.Organizes information in response to the annual budgetary process. Assists the Director in developing and managing department budgets and maintaining budgetary control over approved budgets.Performs related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of experience processing financial transactions, preparing budgets and financial reports, and exercising fiscal control/oversight.Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and MS Office Suite.Customer service orientation with excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.Ability to work independently, perform analysis, and exercise sound judgment within the scope of authority.Respect for diversity and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with individuals of diverse cultural, social, and educational backgrounds.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Demonstrated knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP) and financial best practices.Knowledge of laboratory animal care/husbandry processes as they relate to budget preparation and fiscal control methods.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, permanent position. The work location is at the UConn Storrs campus.
