JOB SUMMARY

Under the general supervision of a designated team leader, provides domain expertise, broad proficiency, and expert technical support including installation, monitoring, troubleshooting, and problem-solving in support of the University’s centralized Linux servers. This position researches, designs, implements, and maintains Linux systems in support of the University’s centralized business and academic applications. The candidate is expected to be able to contribute to the team technically as well as maintain strong working relationships with technical teams and business stakeholders across the University.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Possesses comprehensive knowledge and the ability to design and manage an enterprise service, such as system management, authentication, storage, and directory services.Identifies and resolves complex system errors. Consults with application owners and other users to resolve problems in program product usage, data storage, and system performance.Leads technical staff in the installation, upgrade, and maintenance of systems applications, operating systems, or infrastructure.Documents modifications made to the hardware, software, or procedures related to systems.Uses standard diagnostic techniques to analyze, identify, and solve problems.Develops procedures, techniques, or programs to analyze or improve the performance and efficiency of software and hardware systems. Documents modifications made to the hardware, software, or procedures related to the systems.Support the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the University’s information as part of the overall University information security program.Designs and develops new system infrastructure or services.Writes advanced scripts and/or programs to assist with managing systems.Works with vendors and management to design, develop, enhance, and implement enterprise solutions.Designs, plans, develops, configures, and implements solutions to ensure the high availability of services if a major disruption is caused by systems issues or large-scale disasters.Plans system upgrades.Responds to inquiries from other departments and collaborates with external departments. Documents all technical work in user guides for future reference.Other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    10 years of related experience; or an associate degree and 8 years of related experience; or a bachelor's degree and 6 years of related experience.Knowledge of systems administration concepts such as installing software, storage management user management, and basic security concepts.Knowledge of desktop applications such as MS Word, Excel, and database tools.Knowledge of basic networking and firewall policies.Knowledge of server/system automation.Knowledge of Linux servers.Knowledge of system design/analysis, scripting, and application support.Knowledge of database, web, and application servers.Ability to communicate effectively through both oral and written means.Ability to work independently to analyze available information, draw conclusions and understandings, and present such conclusions to senior management.Experience with Linux OS installations, troubleshooting, and recovery.Skill in critical thinking, problem-solving, and analysis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Experience with redundant database, web, and application services, specifically WordPress, SQL, Oracle, and Oracle Exadata.Experience with software as a service and cloud services, specifically Microsoft Azure.Experience with security standards and compliance, specifically Nessus, NIST, and CIS benchmark standards.Experience with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, specifically RHEL 7, RHEL 8, and RHEL 9.Experience with Red Hat Satellite.Experience with in-place RHEL OS upgrades, specifically RHEL 7 to RHEL 9.Experience with using Microsoft Active Directory for Linux servers.Experience with Red Hat Ansible, Ansible Tower, or Ansible Automation Platform.Experience with network load balancing and high availability, specifically with Citrix ADC.Experience with creating and managing firewall policies, specifically with Fortinet FortiGate firewalls.Experience with backup technologies, specifically CommVault.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 12-month, on-site, permanent position located on the main campus in Storrs, CT. The University offers a competitive salary, outstanding benefits including employee and dependent tuition waivers at UConn, and a highly desirable work environment. The hiring range for this position is $86,125 - $111,962 and will be commensurate with the successful candidate's background and experience.
