JOB SUMMARY

The UConn Library seeks a collaborative and proactive professional to serve as the Library’s digital geospatial data and data visualization expert. The Research Services Librarian works with campus and community partners to align the Library’s digital geospatial resources and services as well as open data resources with campus research and teaching needs, as well as with needs off-campus, in the community, and in the state of Connecticut.

The Research Services Librarian connects UConn Library collections, services, and spaces to stakeholders in support of research, scholarship, teaching, and learning at UConn and in the state of Connecticut. Essential to success in the position is active engagement in ongoing outreach and communication with students and faculty and contributing to the advancement of the UConn Library through collaborating with colleagues, partnering with stakeholders, and engaging with Library-wide initiatives in support of life-transformative education.

The Research Services Librarian reports to the Head of Research Services in the Academic Engagement area.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    Leads and manages UConn Library’s Map and Geographic Information Center (MAGIC), currently consisting of digitized aerial imagery, digitized historic maps, and unique shapefiles, planning and enacting the Center’s future as an online resource for open datasets, maps, imagery, and other resources, and as a service for UConn and citizens of the state of Connecticut. Serves as a research librarian and library liaison to the Departments of Geography and Geosciences and potentially other areas, working with students, faculty, and staff, maintaining knowledge of subject areas and stakeholder needs, especially in the area of data discovery, use, and visualization.Serves as the supervisor for the 9-month MAGIC Graduate Assistant.Engages in outreach to stakeholders on campus, such as UConn’s Center for Land Use Education and Resources (UConn CLEAR), integrating the UConn Library into curricular and co-curricular programming efforts. Engages in outreach to stakeholders off campus, integrating the Library’s resources and services into state, regional, and national efforts.Designs and teaches in-person and online instructional sessions and workshops, including subject-based information and data literacy instruction.Incorporates principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion into services, programs, and collections related to the work of the position.Provides research support, including in-depth research consultations for UConn and non-UConn affiliates, and participates in UConn Library’s virtual reference services.Engages with collections related to the position across the lifecycle, including collection development, management, and assessment in collaboration with UConn Library colleagues.Engages with the Library’s physical map collection, making recommendations as to collection scope, preservation, digitization, and access as appropriate.Advances digital scholarship efforts through the creation of online resources, instruction, teaching, project work, and/or in collaboration with stakeholders.Communicates and collaborates with UConn Library colleagues across all campuses and units to explore and meet stakeholder needs and advance Library collaborations and interdisciplinary efforts. Engages in professional development and continuing education and is active in professional associations related to the work of the position.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    A graduate-level degree in a field relevant to the position or a graduate degree in Library and Information Science from an American Library Association-accredited institution (or an international equivalent).Demonstrated knowledge of research and information resources and software related to the position, including geospatial software such as Esri: GIS software, data visualization tools such as Tableau, and mapping platforms.Demonstrated knowledge of information and data literacy principles and information and teaching practices.Demonstrated ability to make a positive contribution to a culture of inclusion and respect in all interactions within the Library and across the University.Demonstrated ability to be successful in outreach and engagement efforts.Ability to develop library tools, services, and opportunities to support learning, research, publications, and scholarship among constituents.Demonstrated public service skills and a strong commitment to customer service.Evidence of reliable, effective, and professional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively with an open approach to problem-solving and recommending, implementing, and supporting solutions.

Additional Minimum Qualifications for Librarian 2

    Minimum of three years of professional related experience.Demonstrated success in outreach and engagement, including establishing and maintaining positive and effective working relationships with internal and external audiences.Proven engagement in professional activities at a statewide, regional, or national level.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    Demonstrated proficiency in instruction or teaching skills.Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly communication ecosystems.Proven ability to engage in instruction in support of digital scholarship.Demonstrated active involvement in professional development.Interest in print maps and map collections.

This is a full-time position based in Storrs, Connecticut.
