Department Statement:

The Metadata and Cataloging Department produces the technical and descriptive metadata needed to provide intellectual and physical access to the Colgate Libraries’ information resources and collections. The department provides prompt access to newly acquired materials in all formats, and enhances access to existing collections based on local and national cataloging standards.

Accountabilities:

Cataloging/Metadata Creation and Maintenance

  • Copy catalog books and other library resources in all formats, subjects and languages using OCLC and the Colgate Libraries’ integrated library system. This includes batch loading of various electronic sources such as e-books or streaming videos.
  • Perform regular maintenance on bibliographic records individually or in batches. This may include work on upgrading records to national and local standards, classification numbers, name and subject headings, physical locations, or reconciling records between different databases such as the catalog and LASR or OCLC.
  • Creation and maintenance of non-MARC metadata for Colgate’s historical collections and institutional repository in Islandora.
  • Resolve bibliographic record-related reports generated within the department or by external vendors.

Authority Work
  • Creation, maintenance, and batch loading of authority records in the Colgate catalog.
  • Resolve authority record-related reports generated within the department or by external vendors.

Other
  • Cross-train in all duties with other members of the department.
  • Provide regular statistical reports of monthly work to Head of Metadata and Cataloging.
  • Work on other special projects as assigned.
  • Attend meetings and professional development opportunities as directed or available

Professional Experience/ Qualifications:

  • Experience using basic computer functions (especially Microsoft Office and Google Suite).
  • Accuracy in work, including the ability to recognize and correct errors found in the course of performing other tasks.

  • Ability to interact in a collegial manner with a culturally diverse group of faculty, staff, and students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with cataloging.
  • Experience with an integrated library system. Knowledge of MARC formats.
  • Reading knowledge of at least one language other than English.

Education:

A minimum of an Associate’s degree is required, or an equivalent combination of education and library experience.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to lift 30-50 pounds, push and pull carts, bend, stoop, and reach.

Responsible for following all procedures to conduct work activities in a safe manner including but not limited to wearing PPE required for specific duties and safe handling of chemicals as outlined by University policies and/or the supervisor. Responsible for immediately reporting any unsafe conditions to the supervisor and/or Environmental Health and Safety.
