PCC is seeking a Full Time Temporary Learning Garden Coordinator, with an anticipated duration through July 31, 2023, to manage the Rock Creek Learning Garden, a production-based educational farm.

The Learning Garden provides experiential education and lifelong learning opportunities for PCC students, faculty, staff and community members. Established in 2006, the 3.6 acre garden includes 18 raised beds (12 for food production and 6 for the Identify Based Equity Centers), approximately 1 acre of row crops, a cob shed and welcome kiosk, a picnic pavilion with cob oven, 65-tree orchard, berries, grapes, mason bee hives, and public art pieces throughout this chemical-free growing space. The Learning Garden promotes interdisciplinary academic achievement, leadership development and sustainable food systems through experiential education, and produces over 5,000 lbs of food each year. Food is grown for sale at our on campus farm stand, Portlandia FarmStandia and for donations to Panther Pantry.

The Learning Garden Coordinator will be responsible for the physical maintenance of the garden space, including: garden planning and management creating and coordinating planting, maintenance work, developing harvest and distribution schedules, oversight and maintenance of all garden equipment, tools, and supplies.
The Learning Garden Coordinator will be responsible for ensuring the educational use of the garden space, including: coordinating volunteers and garden staff; collaborating with other divisions, departments, students and faculty to coordinate student learning opportunities (such as hosting garden tours and community based learning projects); collaborating with partners in the Beaverton and Hillsboro School Districts to host learning opportunities for K-12 students; maintaining relationships with community partners (such as Portland Fruit Tree Project and Washington County Master Gardeners; ; and working with college partners to sell and/or donate all food grown in the Learning Garden, including coordinating our campus farm stand and donating food to Panther Pantry.

Responsibilities / Duties:

- Garden management includes all aspects of chemical-free food production on a 3.6 acre educational farm, as well as utilizing bench space in a heated greenhouse, and 12 raised beds in unheated hoop house; oversight and maintenance of all garden equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Program management including coordinating volunteers and garden staff; operating within and managing a budget; harvest for sale and/or donation of all food grown in the Learning Garden, including coordinating our campus farm stand and donating to Panther Pantry. Track data and share results when requested.
- Communicate in a timely and respectful manner in writing and verbally with colleagues, students and community members. Maintain Garden Gossip newsletter (via Mailchimp), including editing and outreach for student submissions.
- Attend bi-weekly, one-on-one meetings with supervisor, and monthly meetings with district-wide learning garden coordinators and supervisors.
- Collaborate with other divisions, departments, students and faculty to coordinate student learning opportunities, community partnership projects,community-based learning activities and event planning.
- Support and continue to create new and innovative strategies to address food insecurity on campus and in our community, and partner with Disability Services to continue efforts to increase garden accessibility.
- Collaborate with community partners including: Beaverton and Hillsboro School Districts, Portland Fruit Tree Project, Washington County Master Gardeners, etc.

  • Demonstrated experience in garden management including planting, maintenance, harvest and distribution schedules.
  • Experience recruiting, training, mentoring, coordinating volunteers and garden staff; ability to collaborate with community, faculty and students to develop partnership projects and community-based learning activities.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of chemical-free, regenerative practices of production gardening and farming.
  • Demonstrated experience working with students and faculty in a non-traditional learning environment.
  • Experience in operations such as managing sales, marketing, outreach to customers, and other related tasks.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in all work.

Minimum Qualifications

To be considered, your application must demonstrate these minimum qualifications. (Experience is calculated based on the start and end dates you provide multiplied by the number of hours per week worked).

High school diploma or equivalent.

Two years of post-secondary education in a specific technical discipline appropriate to the instructional support (relevant experience may substitute for the post-secondary education requirement on a year-for-year basis).

Three years of experience in Garden planning and management are required.

Must have proven written and oral communications skills adequate to assist students in understanding the work they are to perform. Proven ability to lead others and evaluate performance. Depending on laboratory assignment, some positions may also require specialized knowledge and program-specific certifications.

Position Grade19Starting Salary ExpectationsThe first two steps of the range are: $48,182 to $49,627 per year. Additionally, PCC provides a tuition waiver for yourself, domestic partner, and dependent children under 24 years of age. Partial tuition reimbursement for yourself at other accredited institutions (full-time employees only).

Paid Leave: (Pro-rated by FTE for Part-Time Employees)

Changes in the performance environment require occasional upgrading of skills.
