Primary Purpose of Department:

The Bioinformatics and Genomics department is in the College of Computing and Informatics. The department is a research-intensive unit with both a Ph.D. program in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology and a M.S. in Bioinformatics. Faculty in this Department support an undergraduate Bioinformatics Minor and Bioinformatics Concentrations within the BS and BA degrees in Computer Science. The Department has excellent BSL-2 and BSL-3 wet lab facilities, several high-performance computer clusters, and has dedicated space for postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and staff.

Primary Purpose of Position:

This position is a Laboratory Specialist. The primary purpose of this position is to manage and execute research in departmental research laboratories, and to autonomously research, select and develop experiments, protocols, and procedures to support departmental research goals.

Summary of Position Responsibilities:

  • Provide support to faculty with laboratories in the Bioinformatics Building, as assigned, to achieve diverse research objectives.
  • Maintain awareness of research needs and time requirements of multiple research projects each year, and plan and manage laboratory time, resources and equipment usage accordingly.
  • Research, develop and test laboratory protocols as needed for a variety of projects, and train students, faculty and other laboratory team members in the application of standard protocols.
  • Assist in research project management, budget management, and timely sourcing, acquisition and management of equipment and supply inventory for federally funded research projects and other active research in the department.
  • Develop standard operating procedures for common use equipment and coordinate with the campus Biosafety officer and with EHS to ensure compliance with biosafety and occupational safety requirements. Provide support to faculty in developing and submitting Biosafety protocols and maintaining compliance.
  • Assist in the maintenance of shared equipment and facilities.

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • BS in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related field. Master’s in Science is preferred.
  • Minimum of two years related research laboratory experience.
  • Minimum of one year experience of in training junior staff or students in a laboratory setting.
  • An equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience will be considered.

Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Master’s in Science
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the application of high throughput sequencing and molecular detection technologies.
  • Demonstrated experience in protocol design and optimization.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interact with collaborators at all levels, including departmental and college leadership, researchers, graduate students, and scientific support staff.
  • Ability to prioritize and provide clear direction to team members.
  • Demonstrated enthusiasm for challenging problems and innovative solutions.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, motivation, and build trust with a diverse team.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within time and budget constraints to drive projects to completion.
  • Strong time management, multi-tasking, and organizational skills.
