Job Summary

The Information Systems Engineer develops and maintains Ruby on Rails web applications for intranet and internet transactional websites for Administration and Finance (A&F) departments. Recommends new technologies, helps plan future directions for A&F, and leads internal projects.

Essential Functions

  • Designs, develops, deploys, documents, and supports enterprise class, mission critical web applications using Ruby on Rails, Single Sign-On Authentication, Web Services, version control software, SQL, Oracle, vendor APIs, and other related technologies.
  • Provides consulting to A&F departments on the design and development of web and intranet sites. Designs and maintains web and intranet sites throughout A&F.
  • Participates in the planning of short- and long-term goals and directions for A&F Web programming group.
  • Re-programs and migrates applications from legacy PHP infrastructure to Ruby on Rails while maintaining mission critical access to the information.
  • Leads paired programming and periodic code reviews. Follows University guidelines for security policies, standards, and PCI compliance. Attends training, as required. Other Responsibilities.

Minimum Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

  • A bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related field OR Associates Degree in Computer Science, Business or related field with two (2) or more years of relevant experience.
  • Experience meeting demands of a complex production environment where system availability is mission critical. Must be able to plan and schedule migrations and updates to minimize impact on users. Must be able to troubleshoot and fix problems while communicating expected time to resolution under stressful conditions.
  • Experience programming complex web applications using languages such as PHP and model–view–controller software architecture and frameworks such as Ruby on Rails in conjunction with technologies such as CSS, JavaScript, XML, JQuery and AJAX.
  • Experience with prototyping, unit testing, and agile software development methodologies.
  • Excellent oral and written communications skills.
  • Knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL) and experience with maintaining Linux systems.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Understands responsibilities with respect to conflicts of interest and behaves in ways consistent both with law and with University policy.

  • Preferred Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Education, Experience, Certifications, Licensure)

    • Knowledge of web server administration (Apache and Internet Information Server) and experience with data security standards and best practices.

    Physical Demands/Working Conditions

    • Balancing, carrying, pulling/pushing, repetitive movement, standing, bending, climbing, driving, reaching, sitting, twisting and lifting.
    • Travel to other campuses and typical office environment.

    Work Schedule

    • 7.5 Hours per day, Monday - Friday.
    • Required to work some nights.
    • Required to work some weekends.
