Stanford University is seeking a Laboratory Services Manager to maintain the service center facilities and supervise staff supporting the operations of the Cell Sciences Imaging Facility's School of Engineering Shriram Center facility. The facility provides high-resolution, state-of-the-art technologies for imaging and analyzing the molecular and structural organization of cells and tissue as well as bioengineered materials to all Stanford University and industry researchers. The Shriram facility offers sophisticated and demanding microscopy techniques (e.g. light sheet, super-resolution, confocal, 2-photon, live cell imaging, Bio-AFM, highly multiplexed imaging and array tomography as well as image processing and analysis.)

Duties include:
  • Oversee the daily operation and management of SOE Shriram CSIF facility to ensure reliable ongoing availability of microscopes, equipment, and services.
  • Develop and provide weekly/daily training sessions for students, post-docs and other researchers in the proper and safe operation of microscopes as well as on image processing and 3D rendering software.
  • Train facility users (2-5 PhD students, post docs, researchers/week average) in the operation and application of advanced imaging technologies (confocal, light-sheet, 2-photon, super-resolution, and wide-field deconvolution) such they can successfully complete imaging experiments and collect publishable data.
  • Contribute technical expertise and perform research and development in support of programs/projects; act as advisor/consultant in area of specialty (microscopy). Will advise, design, and help execute advanced and complex imaging experiments, of both fixed and live samples, with students, researchers.
  • Assist in the analyzing and interpreting experimental data and suggest next experiment(s) or changes in experimental design.
  • Contribute to published articles or presentations; prepare and write reports; draft and prepare scientific papers. Must read research literature for information specific to difficult or new research samples to solve problems associated with sample preparation, immune-histochemical staining and imaging.
  • Produce poster presentations that show case and acknowledge facilities' services and LSM2's expertise. Detailed write-up of experimental methods section for researchers and assist in data analysis for research publications as needed.
  • Provide technical direction to other research staff, engineering associates, technicians, and/or students, as needed.
  • Support and supervise facility approved BSL2 imaging experiments.
  • Create and provide educational and support content for facility website and courses.
  • Contribute, in part or wholly, to the writing of shared instrumentation grant proposals
  • Plan and determine equipment need, authorize purchase of equipment including capital improvements, and manage installation of equipment and instruments in collaboration with facilities services staff. Evaluate and strategically determine equipment upgrade/replacement options and other alternatives in lieu of repair based on latest technological advances and current and future needs.
  • Negotiate, select, and monitor complex equipment service contracts and warranties with vendors. Includes interfacing with vendors and arranging for preventive maintenance and emergency repair of all equipment as well as configuration and alignment of microscopes and lasers.
  • Administer and prepare complex facility budgets that include multiple funding sources.
  • Oversee and administer health and safety programs and ensure safety compliance; liaise with school and/or university health and safety office as appropriate.
  • Direct work of other staff including supervision, hiring, promotions, and terminations; determine staffing needs, and ensure efficient utilization of staff.
  • Environment is very dynamic and extremely varied in terms of experimental samples and research inquiries, therefore employee must be flexible in approach and possess knowledge in advanced microscopy techniques and biological imaging of live and fixed samples, as well as cell biology and some graduate level optics.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):
  • Understanding of academic research facility needs.
  • General background in a discipline related to the work of specific lab(s).
  • Demonstrated supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated experience managing multiple large budgets.
  • Knowledge and experience in managing facilities, operations, maintenance, space, and equipment administration in a research or teaching setting.
  • Excellent communication and customer services skills.
  • Ability to coordinate and manage multiple projects in a complex and technical environment.
  • Familiarity with health and safety compliance regulations.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently stand, walk, twist, bend, stoop, squat, grasp lightly, use fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, perform desk-based computer tasks, use telephone, write by hand, lift, carry, push and pull objects weighing over 40 pounds.
  • Occasionally sit, kneel, crawl, reach and work above shoulders, sort and file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely climb, scrub, sweep, mop, chop and mix or operate hand and foot controls.
  • Must have correctible vision to perform duties of the job.
  • Ability to bend, squat, kneel, stand, reach above shoulder level, and move on hard surfaces for up to eight hours.
  • Ability to lift heavy objects weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to work in a dusty, dirty, and odorous environment.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May require work in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research.
  • May be exposed to radiation or electromagnetic fields.
  • Must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing and gloves, etc.
  • May work extended or unusual work hours due to research or project requirements and peak work cycles. After hours on-call availability required
