This position is open until filled with an initial candidate review to take place after August 12, 2022.

Under the supervision of Dr. Storholm and the SHEL Lab Manager, the Graduate Research Assistant will assist with enrolling and onboarding participants into research projects, data collection, data analysis, and other research tasks for NIH-funded research projects focused on the prevention of HIV/STI transmission among sexual minority men, transgender, and nonbinary identified individuals. The overall goal of this research is to improve the overall health of sexual and gender minority community members by reducing stigma, improving mental health, reducing substance use and violence exposure, and increasing engagement in biomedical prevention interventions for HIV and other STIs.

The Graduate Research Assistant will primarily work on one of the following ongoing projects:

  1. Project Eros

This is currently evaluating the impact of intimate partner violence (IPV) on health behaviors among a prospective cohort of 500 sexual minority men, particularly as it relates to engaging in HIV and STI risk and prevention behaviors. This study will run entirely virtually/online with participants from all over the United States. The Graduate Research Assistant will support this work by enrolling and onboarding participants into the study over zoom, working as a liaison between research participants and the research team, participating in data collection, and will have the opportunity to assist in data analysis and dissemination of findings.

  • PrEP Well

  • This project is currently implementing and pilot testing PrEP Well, a comprehensive implementation strategy that addresses structural barriers to HIV prevention for trans and nonbinary identified persons by integrating culturally appropriate and gender-affirming PrEP care into existing sexual and gender wellness services at a Los Angeles Based trans community center. The Graduate Research Assistant will support this work by working as a liaison between staff of the community center and the research team, participating in data collection, and will have the opportunity to assist in data analysis and dissemination of findings.



    Responsibilities
    The Graduate Assistant is responsible for but not limited to:



    Core Responsibilities
  • Scheduling, enrollment, and onboarding of participants via online Zoom sessions (50%).
  • Help coordinate appointments across multiple organizations involved in the projects (10%).
  • Attend team meetings for assigned projects (10%).
  • Perform data collection, help to organize and manage data (10%).
  • Analyze data (qualitative and/or quantitative based on skills/interests) (10%).
  • Communicate effectively with Dr. Storholm, the Lab Manager, and other SHEL team members (postdoc-, doctoral-, masters-, and undergraduate-level staff) about the progress on assigned tasks (10%).

  • Demonstrated evidence of organizational skills and high-level attention to details.
  • Clear and professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Time management skills, ability to prioritize deadlines, and see tasks through.

  • Project Specific Knowledge and Abilities
  • Strong-interpersonal skills (comfortable speaking in team meetings and to new study participants).
  • Must be comfortable working with sexual and gender minority populations and be comfortable working on projects with an explicit focus on sexual health.
  • Ability to work independently (self-directed) as well as collaboratively in team settings.
  • Required Experience/Education
    • Equivalent to completion of a bachelor’s degree and registration in an SDSU graduate degree program.

    Preferred Knowledge and Abilities
  • Quantitative and/or qualitative analytical experience/skills
  • Experience working with Excel and other Microsoft office software
  • Knowledge of sexual and gender minority-focused social media and dating platforms
  • Graphic and/or website design experience
