Educational and Experience Requirement:

Bachelor’s degree in Counseling, Student Development, or related field. Bachelor’s degree in any of the Health Science Programs – Health Care Studies, Fashion Merchandising, Food Science & Nutrition, Food Service Management, Health Sciences, Human Performance & Wellness Management, Interior Design, Kinesiology, Nursing, or Public Health – is preferred. One year experience in career development or related field. A combination of education, experience, and training that would produce the required knowledge and abilities could be considered.

Nature & Purpose of Position:

Ensures career education and professional career development is incorporated into the campus environment. Seeks to integrate career development into the curriculum and co-curriculum, empowering more staff and faculty to impact students. Serves as Career Coach for the College of Health Sciences at SHSU.

Primary Responsibilities:

Serves as a Career Coach for all students in every major at SHSU. Also serves as Career Coach liaison for the College of Health Science and provides career development support to students and graduates from this college. Creates scalable solutions to integrate career education into assigned colleges and partner offices. Develops career education content that is relevant to key academic areas and delivered through multi-model channels. Delivers programming, training, classroom presentations, initiatives, and advising which leads students to identify career pathways, find internships and job opportunities, and achieve career success after graduation. Advises and educates students through appointments, drop-in advising, and group settings on career and professional development topics. Promotes the use of relevant technology platforms, including Handshake, with students, staff, faculty, and other key audiences. Leverages data to inform career education activities. Tracks data and outcomes in relevant databases and platforms for assigned student populations. Increases and maintains engagement with key departments on campus, such as academic advising, pre-professional advising, athletics, student life, and other constituents under the direction of the Associate Director. Tracks, assesses, and improves the effectiveness of career success programs and efforts. Supports efforts to connect academic units, offices, and students with relevant opportunities in coordination with the Employer Partnerships team. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Other Specifications:

Requires a general knowledge of standard office functions. Communicates with other University departments, personnel, and other agencies and must have excellent communication and leadership skills. Must have proficient public speaking skills to conduct career-related presentations, and assist students with resume writing, cover letters, and mock interviews. Requires knowledge of policy and procedures pertaining to department, division, and University. Position will require working occasional evening or weekend hours for Peer Career Advisors training events, campus career events, or career event set up. Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws. Requires occasional evening or weekend hours during fall and spring semester to facilitate presentations or workshops on a rotational basis with other full-time staff members and for Career Success Center events. Must have the ability to supervise business functions.

Up to 20% of this position, over the fiscal year during off-peak periods, may be performed remotely as determined by the supervisor.
