Stanford University has an immediate opening for a full-time, fixed term Student Immigration Advisor for Bechtel International Center. Bechtel International Center is the designated university office responsible for compliance with federal immigration regulations affecting international students and scholars sponsored by Stanford University.

The Student Immigration Advisor is part of a team that advises University F-1 and J-1 international students and their dependents about all relevant aspects of immigration regulations and Stanford policies. The Student Immigration Advisor is responsible for the management and issuance of visa documents for F-1 and J-1 students and their dependents. This position is also responsible for educating the campus about and complying with the requirements of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), SEVP and Department of State (DOS). Data systems are a vital aspect of our work, and this position has shared responsibility for ensuring that data submitted to the federal government is accurate.

In this role, you will:
  • Serve as State Department Alternate Responsible Officer (DS-2019 eligibility, issuance, compliance) and Designated School Official (I-20 eligibility, issuance, compliance)
  • Liaison with various government agencies such as the U.S. Department of State, U.S. Department of Homeland Security agencies, SEVP and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and SEVIS Help Desk as necessary.
  • Responsible for communication with Stanford students on F and J visas through email, website and social media.
  • Provide advising (walk-in, email, and phone etc.) to students and their dependents. Escalate issues to a senior advisor as needed.
  • Assist with processing various requests from students and departments.
  • Identify areas in which technological improvements may enhance compliance, service and advising for the large population of international students and their dependents.
  • Lead, create and contribute to development of business practices and organizational change to improve processes and workflow including assisting in developing broad institutional policies regarding compliance with immigration regulations relevant for Stanford sponsorship.
  • Develop and implement plans for outreach efforts, in the form of orientation sessions and immigration updates to students and campus administrators. Represent department and university at meetings and events.
  • Collaborate with others to help resolve program issues and concerns, interpret policies, and mediate complex and sensitive issues. May be tasked with evaluating and recommending program improvements.
  • Resolve multi-dimensional matters in response to students in crisis, at risk, or who have other program issues, counsel students and parents on sensitive and confidential issues.

To be successful in this role, you will bring:
  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience
  • Strong communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and management
  • Advanced analysis and problem solving skills
  • Proficient in computer skills, including experience with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Advanced customer service skills
  • Relevant computer systems/technology experience
  • Ability to ensure and apply compliance with legal, financial, and university policies and external regulations

In addition, preferred requirements include:
  • Graduate degree preferred
  • Experience with immigration advising
  • Ability to qualify to serve as an Alternate Responsible Officer and Designated School Official
  • Demonstrated knowledge of systems procedures and demonstrated experience in day-to-day handling of systems and data including familiarity with SEVIS database
  • Demonstrated familiarity with computer applications such Excel and PowerPoint and an understanding how such programs can help with the evaluation of work functions and procedures
  • Ability to respond with confidence to immigration queries that may have a significant effect on an individual's presence in the United States
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy and to work with departments and students who are under the pressure of deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal communication and writing skills
  • Ability to efficiently process multiple tasks in parallel with strong attention to detail
  • Familiarity with a variety of social media platforms


Working Conditions:
  • Occasional evenings, as needed.
  • Hybrid work schedule requiring on-site work 2 days per week.
