SOMA - Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) and Public Health Research Specialist

A.T. Still University's School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona (ATSU-SOMA) invites applications for an exempt Community Oriented Primary Care (COPC) and Public Health Research Specialist on the Mesa, Arizona campus. The individual will work with the Public Health Department Chair to help OMS II students fulfill scholarly activity requirements. They will work closely with students to support their second-year Community Oriented Primary Care projects and provide support for the Epidemiology and Biostatistics/Preventive Medicine courses. The individual will also work with Department Chair to support the DO/MPH dual degree program. Serve as a coordinator to track student applicants and progress in the program.

The individual will support other research projects as directed by Public Health Department Chair.

Major Job Duties

Epidemiology and Biostatistics & Preventative Medicine (EBPM) course coordination and support.

  • Serve as course coordinator by posting all course materials and collecting all course assignments.
  • Communicate with students regularly under the supervision of the course director (CD).
  • Provide input for large group interactive sessions, research background material, and support education sessions under the direction of CD.
  • Develop templates and instructional aids for students such as proposal guidelines, literature review guides, and other materials to help support COPC and research.
  • Input all exam items into the exam delivery system.
  • Work with CD to introduce community-oriented primary care (COPC) concepts and project requirements to OMSI students.
  • Support OMSII course participants in the development, implementation, and evaluation of their COPC-based community projects.
  • Under the supervision of CD, provide detailed edits for student project deliverables, including but not limited to proposals, budget requests, IRB applications, abstracts, and posters.
  • Relate experiences from the Public Health community and various environments to student projects.
  • Work with SOMA staff and students to coordinate student community projects, including student acquisition of materials for projects, student purchasing, and support for student travel.
  • Work closely with students to help coordinate student participation in the NACHC CHI.

 DO/MPH Program coordination.

  • Work with Public Health Department Chair on DO/MPH recruitment. Obtain academic records for interested students and obtain approval from Dean for application. Communicate with candidates throughout the application process.
  • Oversee student schedules and status to monitor program progress.
  • Oversee completion of graduation requirements and procure graduation letter to be passed to the College of Graduate Health Sciences.
  • Track dual degree student progress, update Public Health Department Chair regularly, and provide a list of program graduates each year.

Promote and participate in research and other scholarly activity.

  • Support faculty, staff, and students on individual research and scholarly projects under the direction of the Public Health Department Chair.
  • Support faculty and staff to help develop grant proposals and complete applications under the direction of the Public Health Department Chair.
  • Develop templates and instructional aids for research proposals, literature reviews, case reports, and other scholarly work.
  • Maintain records of scholarly activity from the Department of Public Health and analyze data related to scholarly achievements.

Other Duties

  • Maintain records of Public Health department scholarly activity and prepare reports
  • Participate in Local and National Public Health meetings to promote the combination of Primary Care and Public Health.
  • Work with Chair to identify Public Health Priority areas for ATSU-SOMA.
  • Contribute to the development of instructional materials and activities for select EBPM class sessions.
  • Share research and other scholarly work at local and national meetings.
  • Coordinate student community project posters and project presentations at the NACH CHI annually.
  • Develop and distribute community project books to ATSU and NACHC leadership.

Skills/Requirements:

  • Graduate degree i.e. MS in Healthcare Informatics, MPH, MHA, MS in Healthcare Management or related field.
  • 2-3 years' experience with research methods and design, public health experience with knowledge of public health systems and practice, interprofessional collaboration, medical education and technology.
  • Research, data analysis, database management, report generation and communication, instruction, development of instructional materials.

This position will allow ATSU-SOMA to continue to mentor the physicians of the future, those who are able to take care of populations as well as individuals. The merger of primary care and pubic health is critical to the development of the new physician. This position will provide critical support for student COPC scholarly activity. This position also supports the innovative dual degree DO/MPH program. Also, this position provides support for faculty, staff and students related to research and other scholarly activity.
