Summary of Duties:

The School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering (MME) in the Voiland College of Engineering and Architecture (VCEA) at Washington State University invites applications from outstanding candidates for two full-time tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor or Associate Professor in Materials Science and Engineering.

One position will focus on experimental research, while the other will be on theoretical/modeling work. Candidates with research interests in ceramic materials will be given the highest priority. Experience in ceramic processing, powder processing, functionally graded materials, and ceramic coatings will be of significant interest for the experimental position. Expertise in the processing-structure-properties relationship in ceramics related to thermomechanical properties for extreme applications, such as hypersonic flight, will be a plus. For the theoretical candidates, experience in data science or materials informatics methods to study ceramic materials will be of significant interest. Experience in Big data, machine learning, and high entropy materials will be a plus. Exceptional candidates with expertise in other areas of ceramic materials will also be considered.

MME currently has about 40 instructional faculty members, 900 undergraduate students, 90 Ph.D. students, and 20 M.S. students. The current annual extramural research expenditure is about $10 million in MME.

It is expected that the successful candidate will, in collaboration with the current faculty, play a leading role in building interdisciplinary teams with substantial external research funding in the respective area and be an effective instructor for undergraduate and graduate classes in materials science and engineering. Candidates must show a record of scholarly and educational activities and accomplishments demonstrating the potential to become outstanding educators.

Required Qualifications:

  • Applicants must have an earned Ph.D. in materials science and engineering, ceramic engineering, metallurgy, or a related field by the employment start date

  • Demonstrated record of accomplishments to build a robust research program

  • Demonstrated excellent verbal and written communication skills

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated commitment to collaborate with internal and external groups to build successful interdisciplinary teams with substantial externally-funded research portfolios.

  • Demonstrated leadership roles in the respective areas, and effective instructors of undergraduate and graduate classes in mechanical engineering.

  • Candidates at the Associate Professor level must possess superior leadership skills and experience applicable to leading large, externally-funded research programs.
