Departmental Overview

The Space Sciences Laboratory (SSL) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) of the Berkeley campus reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Research. SSL's primary goal is to foster research in space-related sciences and to provide education for the next generation of space scientists. Research at SSL, led by Berkeley faculty and SSL Senior Fellows, focuses on experiments and observations carried out in space as well as theoretical and basic research.

Since its inception in 1959, SSL has participated in over 50 NASA space science missions, including the Apollo, Mars, Discovery, and Explorer
programs, as well as many international space missions. SSL researchers have pioneered the development of instrumentation for study of the Sun, the interplanetary medium, the planets, and the Earth; for ultraviolet, x-ray, gamma-ray, and infrared astronomy; and for the measurement of the cosmic microwave background.

SSL provides the engineering and technical capabilities required to develop and fabricate individual space instruments, an entire scientific payload for a spacecraft, or an entire space mission from start-to-finish-complete with in-house instrument design and fabrication; instrument and spacecraft integration and testing; launch support; mission and science operations, including commanding the spacecraft and bringing the data down to SSL's own ground station; and data processing and analysis.

Project Systems Engineer of a major spaceflight project. Reports to a higher-level program manager. Serves as a consultant on other programs. Assigns subsystem managers for their part of a program. Manages, prepares, administers, and directs resources. Participates in developing, modifying and executing policies that affect immediate operation and may also have campus-wide effect. Erroneous decisions or failure to achieve goals results in additional costs and personnel, and serious delays in overall schedules.

Responsibilities

• Generates Project-level Systems Engineering Documentation and assists with entry products for milestone reviews.
• Manages the flow-down of Level 1 requirements, CONOPs, Interface Control Documents, and Baseline Configuration.
• Performs and documents technical trade studies; assists in the design and configuration of the Observatory and Instrument.
• Coordinates and oversees content of component and system-level design reviews.
• Oversees subsystem leads for resource metrics and technical requirements management.
• Implements and monitors NASA or other funding agency procedures, contract terms, guidelines and directives, including all quality assurance and safety requirements.
  

Required Qualifications

• Advanced skills in the planning, development, and implementation of space systems, including one successful complex space instrument from concept development through launch.
• Thorough knowledge and skills in systems engineering covering disciplines (electrical or mechanical) relevant at the Instrument level
• Advanced systems knowledge to effectively integrate multiple engineering disciplines.
• Excellent skills in leading the technical design and development of a space project.

Education/Training:

Doctorate or advanced degree with significant post-graduate work in related field.

Salary & Benefits

This is an exempt, monthly paid position. Annual salary is commensurate with experience.
