Job Description

The Department of English at the University of Missouri-St Louis (UMSL) invites applications for a non-tenure track (NTT) Assistant Teaching Professor to begin January 2023.

We seek a colleague who approaches teaching as a collaborative and evolving venture, and engages in and initiates spirited, inquisitive, open and cross disciplinary dialogue about teaching practices and philosophies. We seek a colleague who can bring energy, excitement, innovation, positivity, and adaptability to the department's functioning and take on multi-faceted roles within the department, college, and university.

Technical and/or science writing courses will comprise a portion of the teaching load for this position, so applicants should demonstrate educational and/or professional expertise in technical and science writing and/or a desire to develop proficiency in teaching courses in these areas. Concomitant interest in how information design, digital and visual rhetoric, and new media infuse all writing is valuable, as is the ability to teach other of our junior level writing courses, courses in three writing certificate programs and courses that serve the undergraduate English major with its three foci of writing studies, literature, and creative writing.

The position is a one-year, non-tenure track, benefits eligible appointment with possibility of annual reappointment and promotion through the ranks of associate and full teaching professor. Faculty in NTT positions contribute 80% of their time to teaching and 20% to service at the departmental, college, and university levels. The expected teaching load for this position is 4/4 with the potential for summer teaching opportunities.

Qualifications

The position requires a master's degree in English or related field, demonstrated knowledge of contemporary writing pedagogy, and, as explained above, educational and/or professional expertise in technical and science writing and/or a desire to develop proficiency in teaching courses with these emphases. A PhD in writing studies or relevant professional expertise is preferred.

A PhD in English is preferred.
