Veterinary Technician, Teaching Laboratories

The University of Tennessee, College of Veterinary Medicine, invites applications for the position of Veterinary Technician. The primary purpose of this position is to coordinate and facilitate laboratories for veterinary students, utilizing both live and deceased animals. This position is heavily involved in teaching students.

Depending on qualifications of the successful candidate, position will begin as a Veterinary Technician II or Senior Veterinary Technician I.  More responsibilities will be expected of those hired in at a more advanced level.



Qualifications
Typical Responsibilities:

    Coordinates, prepares for and instructs teaching laboratories for veterinary students, residents, and interns in conjunction with the primary veterinary instructorCoordinates and maintains relationships with the lab animal facility and/or local animal shelters to procure animals for teaching laboratory.Ensures animals are properly prepared for laboratory Supervises and maintain log for the administration of controlled medicationsInstructs students on proper techniques for restraint, administering medications, placing IV and urinary catheters, aseptic technique, and microscopic evaluation of samples. Supervises the administration of or administers anesthetics and monitors patients under anesthesia as necessary during teaching laboratoryIs responsible for procuring and maintaining adequate supplies for laboratories, including purchasing from outside vendorsMaintains or arranges for repairs of equipment used in laboratoriesIs responsible for ensuring the compliance of regulations pertaining to teaching and research facilities as it pertains to the teaching laboratoryIs available for/attends all inspections taking place with regard to the teaching facilityCollects and supervises the collection of samples for laboratory analysis as it may apply to the teaching laboratoryEnsures the proper dispensation of the animals after the laboratoryProvides veterinary technician coverage for research projects when needed and time allowsInducts and monitors animals for procedures requiring anesthesiaProvides collection of samples for diagnostic analysisCollects dataCommunicates with clients regarding clinical projectsMay also work as a veterinary technician in the small animal hospital during times when laboratories are not being held.
Minimum Qualifications:

Six (6) months of experience in a veterinary medical center or one year in a private veterinary practice.  Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology.  Must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program in Veterinary Technology.  Must have a Veterinary Technician license and must obtain a Tennessee license within one year of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

Three years of experience in a veterinary medical center or five years in private veterinary practice. Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology. Experience teaching veterinary skills, working in research, and in compliance
