Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:The Department of Biostatistics (BIOS) is internationally recognized as a leader in Biostatistics research and training. It is one of eight departments in the Gillings School of Global Public Health whose mission is to improve the health and wellbeing of the population. This mission is accomplished through the interaction of teaching, research and service. The department is one of the largest, most complex departments on campus. For FY19, Biostatistics, was 4th among all departments and centers across campus in research funding at UNC Chapel Hill and currently has almost 300 employees. The Department operates a $46 million sponsored research budget (FY19), a 1.7-million-dollar state budget, a 1.0-million-dollar F&A budget and spends roughly 3.0 million in trust funds annually. The Department has 55 EHRA and EHRA Non-Faculty members, 74 permanent staff members and 162 temporary employees. The Department has 235 students (184 graduate students and 51 undergraduate students). The Department of Biostatistics is housed in three different locations: administrative and faculty offices, including a suite of offices for graduate students in McGavran-Greenberg Hall; the Collaborative Studies Coordinating Center (CSCC) at Carolina Square; and the Carolina Survey Research Laboratory (CSRL) at Bolin Creek Center.
Position Summary:We seek faculty members who can teach a full course load of five (5) graduate- or undergraduate-level classes per year; faculty with less teaching experience will be provided time to ramp up to a full five-class load. We seek faculty who can teach courses in the following areas: probability and statistical inference, linear models, regression, longitudinal data, categorical data, survival data, data science, statistical computing, statistical consulting, and practica. We encourage applications from individuals who have taught in these content areas in either university or non-university settings. In addition to teaching, the selected applicants would be expected to advise and mentor students, review products that students are required to complete (e.g., honors theses, master papers/projects, practicum projects, research papers) and participate in other activities and committees that support the work of the department. All of our degree programs are residential, but our faculty/instructors teach core courses for the school-wide online MPH program.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:A master’s or doctoral degree in biostatistics, statistics, or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:* Demonstrated commitment to contributing to a diverse, equitable, and inclusive environment.
* Experience in the application of biostatistics methods to health science research in diverse settings including academic research centers, pharmaceutical industry, contract research organizations, consulting firms, not-for-profit organizations, or government.
* Experience teaching students with varying levels of academic preparation and experience. (i.e., potentially undergraduate through doctoral)
* Demonstrated interest in the use of teaching methods that emphasize and encourage active student engagement and interaction.
* Experience defining and evaluating competency achievement.
* Comfort with technology that can be applied to teaching and learning enhancements.
* Experience overseeing projects, including practicums and master’s papers/projects, in diverse settings.
* Experience and interest in advising and mentoring.

Location: UNC is located in the heart of Chapel Hill, the best college town in America! It's a friendly town of about 40,000 in the geographical center of North Carolina. Chapel Hill is at the western point of the Research Triangle, an area of about one million people, comprised of Chapel Hill, the cities of Durham and Raleigh, and the Research Triangle Park, home of many corporate offices and scientific research centers. Sports and athletic programs: UNC is an NCAA Division I school with 28 varsity teams.
