Job Summary The Kamerlin group seek a highly-motivated candidate with a strong background in computational chemistry and/or computational biology to join their team. We are international and highly interdisciplinary, using simulation techniques to solve problems at the chemistry-life sciences interface. A particular focus area of the group is on using simulation to understand the evolution of protein function, and the role conformational dynamics plays in this process. The insights this provides are then applied to generate novel enzymes with tailored physicochemical properties. Projects in the group are varied; examples of current projects include (but are not limited to) methodology development including machine learning approaches for enzyme design and multiscale modeling of biochemical reactions, using non-canonical amino acids in protein engineering, understanding the role of loop dynamics and allostery in the evolution of enzyme activity, and generating enzymes with tailored biophysical and biochemical properties for biomedical and environmental purposes. We address these problems using a range of computational techniques including conventional and enhanced sampling molecular dynamics simulations (including Hamiltonian replica exchange simulations and various flavors of metadynamics), structural bioinformatics, and empirical valence bond simulations of reactivity.
The work in our lab is fully computational, however, we collaborate with experimental colleagues across the world, allowing us to synergistically harness a wide range of computational and experimental techniques. There is flexibility in choice of project, and the selected candidate will be able to work on one or more of these research topics, based on scientific background and research interests.
This is a full-time research position, that also includes mentorship of junior researchers. The position will include international travel to conferences and meetings with collaborators, when circumstances will allow.
From a scientific perspective, work in the group involves computational integration of simulation and experimental data, using a wide range of molecular simulation tools, including machine learning, conventional and enhanced sampling simulations, empirical valence bond and QM/MM simulations, free energy calculations, as well as structural bioinformatics tools. Note that you will not be required to have experience of / be expected to utilize all these approaches simultaneously, our group is highly collaborative with team members working closely together on multiple projects based on individual expertise. You are encouraged to take responsibility for the execution of your project, and to contribute creatively to our team’s research program.
