About the Lyle School of Engineering:

SMU’s Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering, founded in 1925, is one of the oldest engineering schools in the Southwest. The school offers eight undergraduate and 29 graduate programs, including master’s and doctoral degrees, through the departments of Civil and Environmental Engineering; Computer Science; Electrical and Computer Engineering; Mechanical Engineering; and Operations Research and Engineering Management. Lyle students participate in programs in the unique Deason Innovation Gym, providing the tools and space to work on immersion design projects and competitions to accelerate leadership development and the framework for innovation; the Hart Center for Engineering Leadership, helping students develop nontechnical skills to prepare them for leadership in diverse technical fields; the Caruth Institute for Engineering Education, developing new methodologies for incorporating engineering education into K-12 schools; and the Hunter and Stephanie Hunt Institute for Engineering and Humanity, combining technological innovation with business expertise to address global poverty.

About the Position:

The Assistant Director of Leadership Development in the Hart Center for Engineering Leadership coordinates leadership and professional development programs for engineering and computer science undergraduate and graduate students. The Assistant Director manages the logistics for the Hart Center's Leadership Assessment, recruits students for the Industry Mentorship Program, assists with leadership coaching, and supports other activities performed in the Hart Center. The Assistant Director plans and executes events and works collaboratively with faculty and staff in the Lyle School and across campus. This position is critical to implementing the mission of the Hart Center and establishes the Center as a key resource for faculty, staff, students, parents, and donors.

Essential Functions:

    Recruit, manage, and track students' participation in the Hart Center's leadership development programs. Assist the Executive Director to recruit industry professionals as speakers, mentors, and coaches for the Hart Center's Industry Mentorship Program, Grand Challenges Scholars Program, Graduate Leadership Certificate Program, and other co-curricular programs.

    Administer the Hart Leadership Assessment and facilitate activities and coaching that align with the leadership competency framework.

    Manage the Lyle Success Connections alumni and student database. Develop strategies to engage students in leadership activities. Monitor student engagement in leadership programs on the Lyle Success Connections platform, and work with the Hart Center staff to support student retention and post-graduation employment.

    Plan and execute the logistics for annual networking events, projects, and programs.

    Advise engineering organization student leaders. Partner with students to plan the annual student leadership retreat and the graduate student leadership certificate program.

    Other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor’s degree is required.  A Master’s degree in engineering or engineering related, leadership, management, or communications is preferred.

A minimum of three (3) years of work experience is required.  Prior experience in people management and leadership experience in engineering, education, human resources, corporate training, executive coaching, or a STEM related field is highly preferred.  Experience working in a university career, advising, or leadership services office is a plus.

Certifications in executive coaching, training, or human resources are preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Candidate must have excellent interpersonal and customer service skills with the ability to work effectively with a wide range of  constituencies in a diverse community.   

Must have excellent written and oral communication skills.

Candidate must possess excellent organizational skills which include effective planning and project management. Must be focused on deadlines and attentive to details.

Candidate must demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and analytical skills.

Knowledge of college student development theories and best practices for supporting student success is preferred. Creative problem solver with the ability to work collaboratively across functional areas is required.

Knowledge of corporate hiring processes is preferred.  Proficient utilizing various social media platforms to achieve goals is required. The ability to use and adapt to technology to achieve work objectives is required.

Candidate must be proficient in the MS Office Suite of products (Word, Excel, Power Point). Familiarity with Canva, Adobe, and other similar creative software is preferred.  Database management to monitor and track student engagement is preferred. Familiar with various social media platforms is preferred.  Ability to learn new software quickly is essential.

Candidate must have outstanding written communication skills, including the proper use of spelling, grammar and punctuation, with the ability to produce error-free communications.
