Starting Pay Rate: Per Adjunct Faculty Pay Scale

Schedule Information:  The faculty member selected will be expected to conduct and teach students in the following courses:

MUS 101 Fundamentals of Music Theory (meets Monday/Wednesday 12:30-1:45pm and Tuesday/Thursday 11-12:15pm, 8/22-12/16): Provides the background to interpret and understand the language of music through the study of notation, rhythm, scales, intervals, triads, cadences, basic forms and musical terms. Students are prepared for the study of harmony and for practical musical activity. Suitable for pre-teachers and non-music majors. 3 contact hours each week.

MUS 103 Music Appreciation (Online-asynchronous, 8/22-12/16): Introduces standard concert repertory through intensive guided listening. Representative works by major composers/songwriters from each period are chosen to illustrate the principal styles, forms and techniques of vocal and instrumental music. 3 contact hours each week.

MUS 104 Introduction to American Music (Online-asynchronous, 8/22-12/16): Develops a stylistic frame of reference for judging popular music. Surveys characteristic elements of jazz, rhythm and blues, popular music and their relation to western classical music. 3 contact hours each week.

MUS 120 Introduction to Music Literature (Online-asynchronous, 8/22-12/16): Surveys the styles, periods, literature and personalities in each of the commonly accepted music periods, with primary emphasis on hearing music of each style. 3 contact hours each week.

Job Description: The Department of Music at Harper College, a two-year institution located 20 miles northwest of Chicago, seeks a faculty member for an adjunct faculty position. Candidates should possess expertise in the following areas of Music: music theory, music literature, ethnomusicology and/or musicology. Other responsibilities include development of instructional plans to meet course competencies, and course activities that support lesson objectives using traditional and alternative delivery methods.

With a faculty of more than fifty artists and scholars brought together from institutions from around the world, every facet of our program is guided by recognized expertise. Members of the performance faculty in the Department of Music maintain active careers ranging from appearances with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Grant Park Orchestra, Chicago Philharmonic, Elgin Symphony Orchestra, and many others, to a wide variety of professional chamber ensembles and solo appearances.

Education Requirements: Masters degree in music or music education or the equivalent.

Experience Requirements: Preference will be given to applicants who have previous experience teaching and conducting vocal ensembles at the secondary and/or college levels.
