Job Description

The University of Missouri seeks a reliable and service-oriented Assistant Lab Animal Technician to support the Office of Animal Resources efforts to develop and deliver care, support, and help to University clients. The successful candidate will foster and maintain positive relationships with co-workers, clients, and other lab personnel. Must have a desire to work with and care for animals on a daily basis.

Key Duties Performed By This Position Will Include:
• Provide husbandry and care to animals in conventional and specialized housing. Observe and report changes in health status or condition of animals. Ensure that animals and cages are labeled appropriately

• Prepare and administer special diets in accordance with protocol. Feed and water animals per standard operating procedures or instruction. Administer treatment or medication according to veterinarian orders.

• Assist with conditioning and breeding programs.

• Maintain cleanliness and sanitation of animal cages, rooms, halls, etc. Operate cage washing equipment and other types of cleaning and sanitizing equipment.

• Assist in performing technical procedures.

• May euthanize and dispose of animals in accordance with standardized procedures.

• Maintaining animal care supplies and inventory.

• Lifting, pushing, pulling up to 50 pounds, some repetitious movements of arms and hands, walking/standing while using a biosafety cabinet, using safety precautions when operating an autoclave

• Ability to follow standard operating procedures (SOPs) and protocols

• Excellent time management skills and an attention to detail in documentation practices

• Capable of working both independently and in a collaborative team setting

7:00 am – 3:30 pm, Saturday - Wednesday

Minimum Qualifications

High school graduate or equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge skills and abilities can be acquired is necessary.

If not already certified by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) as an Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician (ALAT), required to test for ALAT certification within six months of employment in that role. If not successful in passing the first test, must pass the ALAT certification within the next available test offering or be terminated.

One year of experience with at least 6 months in a laboratory animal facility.

General ability to handle and work with animals as well as recognize and treat animal health problems.

Preferred Qualifications

Animal care experience required

AALAS certification at ALAT, LAT, or LATg preferred

Punctual, Attentive, Driven, Motivated

Must be trainable and motivated to complete tasks without micromanaging. Tasks include washing/hosing kennels, facility upkeep, providing feed and some minimal animal treatment. Hearing conservation program enrollment is required
