Writing Center Tutor 


Job Purpose: 


Work with students at Wells College on all types of writing and at all stages of the writing process—from brainstorming to revision, helping to improve their writing in across subject areas and advance students’ skills for the future. 


 


· Job Dutiesand Responsibilities: 


1. Tutors are expected to participate in training sessions and meetings as requested (compensation will be provided).
 2. Tutors will meet with students in the Writing Center or Learning Commons area of the Long Library.
 3. Under no circumstances should a tutor do a student’s work for him/her. Sessions should always be collaborative in nature. Tutors will not write papers, review books or prepare work for a student. A tutor may guide, direct and offer assistance in organizing a paper or assignment, but the student must do his/her own work. The tutor may cancel and/or terminate the tutoring relationship if the tutee presses the tutor to do his/her work and/or write papers for them.
 4. Tutors should inform and/or consult with the Coordinator of the Writing Center if they encounter any problems or need any type of assistance relating to their tutoring situation.
 5. Tutors must maintain scheduled hours. If a tutor is unable to attend a tutoring session, s/he should notify the Coordinator of the Writing Center in advance.
 6. Tutors are expected to respect students’ rights to confidentiality and follow legal guidelines regarding dispersal of information.
 7. Tutors are expected to act as a representative for the tutoring program within the campus community.
 8. Tutors must maintain detailed records and maintain sign-in sheets to document activities. 


 


· JobQualifications: 


Required:
 1. Writing Center Tutors must have at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average.
 2. Tutors must submit a written recommendation from a faculty member that knows them as a scholar and a writer 

 3. Tutors submit a writing sample to Ellie Rivera at erivera@wells.edu. Samples should be academic in nature, and an example of the tutor’s best work. Tutors may submit a secondary creative writing sample if they desire.
 3. Ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds as well as under-prepared, special needs, and multi-lingual students. 


4. Ability to provide some assistance with test-taking strategies, note taking skills, and time management.
 5. Relevant experience that demonstrates the ability to work well with students/peers and leadership skills.
 6. Availability to work flexible hours including nights and weekends.
