Web Development Manager
Johns Hopkins University Press seeks a Web Development Manager (IT Manager) who will be responsible for managing a team of developers in designing, creating, maintaining, and updating web sites for Johns Hopkins University Press (“Hopkins Press”). The Web Development Manager will join a team of exceptional professionals committed to bringing the benefits of discovery to the world by providing global access, impact, and influence for the scholarship that we publish and distribute.

This position will help to ensure that the Press is a leader in the selection and development of innovative ideas and scholarship; the creation of pioneering technologies to enhance discovery and learning; and the connection of people to the most trusted knowledge from global researchers, scholars, and educators.

The Web Development Manager will manage a team responsible for establishing, maintaining, and augmenting the end-to-end business process and flow of various eCommerce web sites, shopping cart transactions and related technology components. With this background, the candidate will guide the design, development, and maintenance of the unified customer experience across Press web site solutions.

The position will also be responsible for managing the troubleshooting of various web sites and eCommerce shopping carts and communicating proactively to business stakeholders. This position reports to the Chief Information Officer of Hopkins Press.

Specific Duties & Responsibilties:
  • Manages the day-to-day operations of a software development team, inclusive of staff oversight, team goal setting, performance reviews, staff augmentation, and mentoring of team members.
  • Identifies and prioritizes requirements by establishing personal rapport with business stakeholders and with other persons in a position to understand service requirements.
  • Establishes work plans based on team capacity and skill sets.
  • Defines and ensures adherence to software development lifecycle standards.
  • Arranges project requirements in programming sequence by analyzing requirements, preparing a workflow chart and diagram using knowledge of platform capabilities, subject matter, programming language, and logic.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies.
  • Protects operations by keeping information confidential.
  • Weave equity, justice, and inclusion principles into all aspects of the work.


Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):
  • A Bachelor's Degree.
  • Additional experience may be substituted for education.
  • 5 years of progressively responsible related experience is required; 2 years of supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Additional education may substitute for experience.*


* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for the required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • 10+ years of experience in software development with at least four years' experience managing software development teams in modern web technologies.
  • Experience in Drupal CMS and its use in marketing and ecommerce functions.
  • Experience working with PERL would be a plus.
  • Excellent critical thinking and communication skills.
  • Superior problem-solving skills including using analytics to drive decisions.
  • Creative thinker; embracing new ideas; passionate about exploiting the potential of Hopkins Press.
  • Inclusive in decision-making and problem-solving.
  • Excel in effective use of resources; keen self-awareness of strengths and weaknesses.
