Developing Multisyllabic Decoding and Encoding Skills for Upper Elementary Learners is a project funded by Reading Reimagined, which is an inclusive Research and Development (R&D) program under the Advanced Education Research and Development Fund (AERDF). AERDF is a national nonprofit initiative that pursues breakthrough outcomes in student learning, well-being, and opportunity.

Project’s Purpose:  It is critical that students in the upper elementary grades have access to high quality, evidence-based instruction to read and write big words in order to be skilled readers and writers as they progress through school and to ensure later life success and career-readiness. Utilizing Design-Based Research methodologies and through a collaboration with upper elementary learners, teachers, and community experts, the project will develop and evaluate the effects of instructional components on students’ decoding, encoding, sentence production, fluency and their confidence to read.

Project Leaders: The project is led by by Professors Zoi A. Traga Philippakos and Margaret Quinn and consists of a dynamic team of student researchers and partners.

Position: We seek a postdoctoral fellow to further the research and development work of the project. This position will provide opportunities for a junior researcher to contribute to the project’s goals while developing a range of research skills. Specifically, the fellow will support the evaluation, selection, development of resources, will delivery instruction, collect data, organize data, work on analysis and writing of reports.

This position is a full-time, 12-month appointment with a salary of  $54,000. At UTK, we strive to provide eligible employees with a comprehensive suite of benefits. Qualifications
Required qualifications:  PhD in Education or related field with at least two years of research experience in literacy education field or linguistics and pedagogy. The candidate should have knowledge of literacy development (reading and writing), language structures, and remediation practices.  At least two years of K-12 teaching experience is required. Demonstrated strong quantitative and qualitative research skills as well as the ability to analyze and transcribe data.  Experience with community-engaged scholarship and strong organizational skills to coordinate data collection, planning, and communications with partners. Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written communications. Outstanding computer skills including ability to use ZOOM and Google docs. Demonstrated academic writing skills. The candidate should have a valid driver’s license and be available to travel for data collection and instruction.

Preferred qualifications: A reading specialist masters or certificate or a degree in linguistics or second language acquisition.

College: The project is based in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences, a leading educational research institution, located in Knoxville, Tennessee. The University of Tennessee (UT) consists of five campuses across the State of Tennessee. The College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences is a multidisciplinary unit with 90+ tenured/tenure-track faculty members, housed in eight departments. TPTE, the College’s largest department, offers programs of study that lead to initial teacher licensure in many areas as well as advanced programs leading to several teaching endorsements including gifted education and the reading specialist. Beyond the licensure programs, graduate education programs prepare master’s students, educational specialists, and doctoral students for careers in research, teaching, and leadership.
