Description:
Reporting to the Associate Dean for Professionalism and Doctoring Skills, the Director, Humanism in Medicine will work with other curricular leaders to instill humanism, perspective taking, and empathy/compassion among the Zucker School of Medicine (ZSOM) medical students through core curricular experiences. The Director will also co-lead the Humanities in Medicine Scholarly Concentration, a four-year longitudinal educational program that culminates in fourth-year medical students mentored scholarly projects. In addition, the Director will partner with ZSOM faculty and medical students in the running of the ZSOM Gold Humanism Society Chapter, Osler Society events, and the literary journal, Narrateur.

This is a part-time faculty position. Work schedule is 8am to 12pm (flexible) from Monday through Friday.

Responsibilities for each respective area include, but are not limited to:
Humanism in Medicine Curricular Thread
• Work closely with course/clerkship directors to embed humanism longitudinally throughout the four years of the MD curriculum.
• Align/coordinate this curriculum thread with the ethics and communications threads.
• Co-lead and facilitate Healer’s Art course.

Humanities in Medicine Scholarly Concentration
• Partner with co-lead to recruit and select a limited number of students each year for the scholarly concentration.
• Co-design and implement all aspects of the scholarly concentration, including but not limited to Tell Me More, Meaning and Medicine, Narrateur submissions, extra-curricular humanities events, Narrative Perspective offered as a required scholarly concentration elective, and culminating capstone project.
• Confirm students complete all the scholarly concentration requirements prior to graduation.

Gold Humanism Society Chapter
• Partner with the Office of Assessment & Evaluation in selection process for yearly inductees.
• Partner with Northwell lead and student inductees to initiate and implement chapter-related events.

Osler Society & Narrateur
• Serve as the SOM point person for Narrateur, Reflections on Caring (Art & Literary Journal) and the Osler Society.

Early morning, evening, and weekend work may be required to monitor program activities and manage workloads.

Qualifications:
• Master’s or Doctoral degree required.
• Background or experience in the humanities and customer-service oriented.
• Highly creative and a self-starter with above-average organizational skills and be detail-oriented.
• Ability to work collaboratively with others to generate ideas for new and innovative curricula and carry them from concept to implementation.
• Demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
• Ability to work independently but also to establish and maintain positive working relationships with diverse staff, faculty, leadership, and students.
• Managerial and decision-making skills to carry out complex projects in a busy work environment and to approach challenges with creativity and innovation.
• Leadership skills to enlist others in shared vision and mission to get projects and tasks completed within tight deadlines.
• Ability to provide own transportation to and from off-site meetings.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in curricular design.
• Ability to navigate social media.
