Position description
The Environmental Design Archives (EDA) seeks a dynamic, collaborative, innovative, and service-oriented professional to manage its public services operations including reference, outreach, and instruction assistance to support the educational mission of the College of Environmental Design as well as the wider UC Community
The Environment
The Environmental Design Archives a non-profit, largely self-supporting research unit of the College of Environmental Design that reports to the Dean of the College, and holds more than five million items within more than 200 archival collections. It is the most extensive source of written and visual information on the development of Bay Area and Northern California architecture and landscape architecture. To support the educational mission of the University, the Environmental Design Archives is committed to raising awareness of the significant design heritage of Northern California through collecting, preserving, and providing access to the primary records of the built and landscaped environment of the region. The Archives offers access to primary resources in all formats and robust services to connect users with those resources and build their related research skills.
The work of many San Francisco Bay region's historically significant architects, landscape architects, planners, and designers are represented in collections of more than 200 individuals and firms. These collections contain drawings, plans, specifications, photographs, audio-tapes, personal papers, business records, furniture, art, models, and artifacts.
The Research Services Archivist manages a program that includes reference, instructional support, outreach including exhibitions, and website management.
Responsibilities
This position reports to the Head Curator of the Environmental Design Archives
This position will:
● Manage an active program of research services including in-person and remote reference, reproduction services, related finances, and rights and reproductions;
● Review, develop, and document policies and procedures that govern the use of archives holdings;
● Ensure all intellectual property concerns relating to the use of collections are addressed within established legal and policy frameworks; promotes open access to archival materials;
● Explore, propose, and implement new technologies that facilitate researcher access to the holdings of the EDA;
● Works with UC faculty and library employees to develop and administer an instructional outreach program that features the holdings of the EDA and supports the teaching mission of the university, encouraging increased faculty and student use of the EDA collection in classroom settings;
● Manage outreach programs including the Archives website, Friends of the Archives, fundraising events, tours, products, and publications;
● Maintain an active exhibit program including registrar duties for outgoing loans;
● Works with EDA librarians, archivists, and other professional staff on long-range planning, annual goal-setting, and policy and procedure development;
● Participate actively in archives, special collections, library and other professional organizations to ensure that the EDA remains aware of current developments in research and instruction for archives and adopts and contributes to the development of relevant standards.
● Demonstrated understanding of the scholarly use of archival collections and services and of current developments in archives and special collections librarianship and related academic subjects including a keen interest in promoting the research use and appreciation of rare and primary source materials and a commitment to planning, implementing, and assessing user-centered services, and understanding the user experience to improve the discovery process of collections
● Demonstrated experience with providing reference and instruction within an archival setting
● Demonstrated ability to work effectively with faculty, students, scholars, archival users, and professional colleagues
● Knowledge of intellectual property issues related to archives, libraries, and special collections.
● Knowledge of architectural or landscape architectural history, theory, or practice
● Experience coordinating external support groups, and developing innovative education and outreach programs
● Demonstrated experience with exhibition programs and registrar duties
● Experience with digitization technologies and reproduction services
● Experience in the ability to work well with others in a team environment
● Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills to work effectively with the media, culturally diverse library users, and colleagues as well as local and regional architecture, landscape architecture, planning, and design communities
● Demonstrated proficiency and capabilities with the Web and electronic, digital, and information technology applications
● Excellent analytical skills; initiative and flexibility; and organizational, time, and project management skills
● Candidate should possess a strong commitment to excellence and demonstrated ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a complex, changing environment
Professional librarians at UC are academic appointees and are represented by an exclusive bargaining agent, University Council - American Federation of Teachers (UC-AFT). They are entitled to appropriate professional leave, two days per month of vacation leave, one day per month of sick leave, and all other benefits granted to non-faculty academic personnel. Preferred qualifications
MLS or equivalent degree from an ALA-accredited institution or an advanced degree in an appropriate subject discipline with relevant special collection or archival training or experience.
