Job Responsibilities

The Education Specialist is responsible for assessing, counseling, and advising adults concerning enrollment in and/or continuing post-secondary education, as well as job/work opportunities and trends. Provide direct, one-to-one career and academic counseling in the areas of career development, financial aid, post-secondary access, life planning, personal crisis intervention, and academic guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Manage day-to-day operations that include coordination with host establishments that now include high schools, responding to inquiries, and scheduling appointments.
  • Conduct and document group counseling classes and workshops for program participants and others within the community on the following topics: college entrance exams, and GED preparation, post-secondary access, college survival skills (test-taking and test anxiety, time management, self-esteem, assertiveness, study skills, etc.), job readiness skills, leadership, and human development.
  • Maintain referral contacts and establish appropriate liaisons with secondary post-secondary institutions, adult education programs, and community agencies, organizations, and businesses
  • Administer, score, interpret and assist participants in processing all information gained from interest, personality, and aptitude tests.
  • Serve as a campus and community resource person for special events and projects.
  • Develop, plan, coordinate, and execute program outreach events and activities throughout the community.
  • Develop and maintain confidential files documenting all services provided to and contacts with participants.
  • Assist in the design, development, and implementation of program objectives.
  • Minimum and Additional Requirements

    This position requires a bachelor's degree and experience in student services programs.

    Preferred Qualifications

    Ideal candidate will have a master's degree with related student services and/or TRiO experience with a minimum of two (2) years of experience. Working knowledge of concepts and methodology of career development, individual and group counseling is vital. The following characteristics are of the utmost importance: judgment, initiative, independence, communication & public relations skills. The ability to understand and maintain both qualitative and quantitative data relative to the project is essential to the success of this position. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the community is a must. The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
