    The Assistant Director of Academic Advising & Retention in the Student Engagement & Achievement (SEA) Center is involved in academic advising and academic administration. The Assistant Director of Academic Advising & Retention will work closely with the Director of Academic Advising & Retention to monitor student's academic records, uphold academic policies, create early alerts for underperforming students, promote student success, review academic standings (including academic probation, suspension, and dismissals) at the end of each semester for advising caseloads, be knowledgeable about major and minor degree programs, and assist in supervising the work activities of the Academic Advisors, Academic Success Coaches. The Assistant Director will be responsible for training and onboarding new employees and promoting professional development opportunities for all employees supervised.

    ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

    • Assists Director of Academic Advising & Retention in providing leadership for daily office procedures, office events, high-level administrative processes, student orientations, and advising/registration activities
    • Provides academic advising guidance to support student retention and progression initiativesIdentifies and helps resolve obstacles impeding the academic success of students (or a particular subset of students, for example probation students)Helps to provide solutions for students' academic and personal issues/concerns and provides referral/intervention servicesExplains academic policies, procedures, and guidelines to students to meet their educational goalsEducates students about the value of academic advising and the importance of the registration processAssesses advising practices and programmingMaintains appropriate student records and documents student interactionsUtilizes advising technology systems to manage student data
    • Identifies and implements innovative strategies, and assess effectiveness in meeting the University's strategic planning goals to increase student retention and success
    • Serves as point of contact or lead for one or more projects/initiatives, providing assessment/evaluation dataMay train or mentor student assistants, peer advisors, and/or Academic Advisors Level I, II, and/or IIIPossesses ability to work independently
    KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

    1. Knowledge of academic culture, policies, and procedures
    2. Knowledge of university personnel and budget management policies.
    3. Knowledge of higher education practices and standards.
    4. Knowledge of current and developing trends in student retention and success.
    5. Skill in the delegation of responsibility and authority.
    6. Skill in the operation of computers and job-related software programs.
    7. Skills in interpersonal relations and in dealing with the faculty, staff, and the public.
    8. Skills in oral and written communication.
    SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY

    • This position supervises Academic Advisors I, II, and III, Academic Success Coaches, and Peer Advisors.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    • Master's degree and 3+ years of relevant work experience in academic support, advising, or student support services
    • Experience providing student-centered vision and leadership within a higher education setting
    • Possesses knowledge of strategic planning and research needed to support student services
