We invite applications for an exciting opportunity in the University of Virginia's Division of Student Affairs. The University’s mission to develop engaged citizen-leaders is the foundation of the Division of Student Affairs work, which is guided by six core values – academic rigor, diversity and inclusion, health and wellness, honor, public service and student self-governance. The Division consists of over 200 employees within five units -- the Office of the Vice President and Chief Student Affairs Officer, Dean of Students; Housing and Residence Life; Student Health and Wellness; the University Career Center; and the Office of African-American Affairs – all working together, for and alongside students, to create the distinctive student experience for which UVA is known. The Division is recruiting an Assistant Dean of Students who will report to the Associate Dean of Students leading the Student Safety & Support Team, as well as work with a team of professionals in the School of Engineering and Applied Science (SEAS) to provide targeted support for students in SEAS.

The Assistant Dean will have Student support responsibilities including triaging student concerns and helping them access appropriate resources, as well as helping students solve problems and respond appropriately to challenges and/or crises. Through formal and informal interaction, student affairs professionals assist students to achieve their goals. These interactions may include responding to student walk-ins; responding to questions from parents, faculty, or staff; or meeting with students who have interpersonal, behavioral, health and wellness, or other concerns to counsel, resolve conflict, or set expectations for future behavior.

Particularly in support of students in SEAS, the Assistant Dean will be expected to:

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for receipt of/and response to reports of students of concern within SEAS.
  • Develop and implement protocol and practices for effective communication, referrals, and student support.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with SEAS faculty, staff, administrators, and embedded SEAS service-providers.
  • Collaborate with partners to provide wrap-around support for students in distress or crisis.
  • Serve on interdisciplinary committees regarding SEAS student well-being and support.
  • Develop and conduct presentations regarding SEAS and University resources to support personal and academic success.
  • Educate and consult on ODOS and University processes and protocol.

The Assistant Dean will also have incident response and crisis management responsibilities. The Assistant Dean will serve in the student affairs on-call rotation and will be expected to respond appropriately to student incidents and crises; coordinate emergency protocols and provide crisis management support. They must also collaborate with and make referrals to University offices/organizations to provide broad-based student support while implementing appropriate administrative processes, as needed.


Candidates must have the following required knowledge areas, skills and abilities:

  • Excellent judgement, ability to “think on their feet” and be nimble and flexible in high-stress situations/environments;
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and ability to work collaboratively and interact effectively with students, faculty, staff, team members, and community/government agencies;
  • Resourceful and collaborative – able to connect and marshal resources across the institution;
  • Strong commitment to the division’s core values of academic rigor, honor, student self-governance, public service, diversity and multiculturalism, and health and wellness;
  • A demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and belonging;
  • Master’s degree or equivalent in Counseling, Higher Education, Student Affairs Administration, or a degree in a relevant field such as Law;
  • Minimum of 6 years of progressive relevant experience, work experience as an undergraduate or graduate student may count toward this requirement.

A competitive applicant for the Assistant Dean position will have many of the following preferred knowledge areas, skills and abilities:

  • A demonstrated mastery of managing student behavioral issues, providing outstanding student advising and support, and excelling in a fast-paced work environment with multiple competing priorities;
  • Knowledge of specific trends and issues affecting student affairs practice, including legal issues;
  • Understanding of psychological support and cognitive development models related to support and development of college students;
  • Strong knowledge of student affairs practices and student development as applied to a diverse range of programmatic areas;
  • Experience with assessment and data-driven decision-making;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills, with ability to present information/facilitate dialogue to a wide variety of stakeholders,

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.
