The School of Languages, Cultures, and Race at Washington State University invites applications for a permanent, full-time, nine-month, tenure-track Assistant Professor in Ethnic Studies and American Studies and Culture position in Pullman, WA, with a specialty in Health Inequities. We seek applicants whose research focuses on Health inequities within the United States or does comparative work between groups in the United States and groups in other countries.

It is anticipated that the successful candidate will begin the appointment on August 16, 2023.

Job duties:

The appointment distribution for the position is 40% research, 40% teaching, and 20% service. The selected candidate will be expected to have a strong research agenda in their area of expertise. The position carries a 2/2 teaching load and candidate will be expected to teach courses within the Comparative Ethnic Studies curriculum. They will also be expected to teach graduate seminars for the American Studies and Culture Ph.D. Program. They will also be expected to develop their own courses and provide service to the unit, the university, and the profession.

Required Qualifications:

  • Earned Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies, American Studies, or related field by date of hire

  • Demonstrated record of or potential for publications in their area of expertise

  • Proven or potential for successful teaching and instruction

  • Demonstrated commitment to campus diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Research engaging in comparative work, i.e., studying more than one population within the United States or transnationally.

  • Evidence of working successfully in inter/transdisciplinary contexts.

  • Evidence of commitment to retention and student-success initiatives.

Associate Vice Provost for Inclusive Excellence Recently Announced

Dr. Lisa Guerrero was recently named associate vice provost for inclusive excellence. Guerrero has been an active advocate for diversity and inclusion since joining the WSU faculty in 2004. She is currently a professor of Comparative Ethnic Studies in WSU’s School of Languages, Cultures, and Race. She will maintain her faculty position, while serving as associate vice provost in a half-time appointment.

Dr. Guerrero will provide leadership to academic affairs in implementing WSU’s commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion. She will help to identify and implement best practices and evidence-based approaches in faculty hiring, tenure and promotion, research support, faculty retention, teaching and mentoring, and curriculum planning. One of her first areas of responsibility will be to oversee the Racism and Social Inequality in the Americas faculty cluster hire program for Fall 2021.
