Description:
Reporting to the Dean of Students/Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs, the Associate Dean of Students is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe, healthy, and supportive environment and culture that synthesizes the intellectual, physical, social, emotional, and spiritual development of students in a holistic way. The Associate Dean of Students serves as the primary student advocate with responsibilities critical to incident management while working with the entire campus community. They serve as an integral member of the Student Affairs senior team committed to supporting student holistic wellness and actively advancing best and next practices. The Associate Dean of Students will have direct supervision and leadership responsibility for the Interfaith Center and Interfaith Center chaplains.

This is a full-time position that is expected to work nights and weekends, with live in/on-campus residence to fulfill on-call responsibilities.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Serves as a front-line point of contact for students and parents on a variety of matters related to critical incident management and student life.
• Works collaboratively with the Dean of Students to coordinate strategic planning initiatives in critical incident management, student outreach, and peer education.
• Provides ongoing vision, direction, and leadership by developing and carrying out goals and strategic plans aimed at enhancing the co-curricular experiences for students and engagement for the campus community.
• Serves on a senior level on-call rotation for the University to support any on campus critical incidents related to safety, facilities issues, or overall wellbeing of students.
• Oversees the division’s ongoing programming, training, and education for prevention awareness including healthy advocacy and abuse prevention efforts, mental health, physical health, alcohol and other drugs, and sexual misconduct.
• Assures University compliance with educational and training mandates of Title IX, VAWA, Cleary, Drug-Free Campuses, Enough is Enough, and implement NIAA (National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism) recommendations for college campus best practices.
• Manages the Vector Solutions/Everfi educational platform.
• Serves as an advocate for students’ intellectual and social development, being a proponent of student development theory and a champion of diversity, inclusion, and social justice, utilizing best practices in creating inclusive communities, intercultural engagement, and ally development for marginalized and historically underserved students, including our BIPOC and LGBTQ+ student community.
• Works closely with the Dean of Students and the Director for Community Standards to coordinate information including statistical reports and revisions to the Community Standards, developing a student conduct program that prescribes and practices ethical behavior among all community members, and serving as a senior level conduct officer for major conduct cases.
• Collaborates with academic deans, vice presidents, and student organizations to address student concerns, campus safety, non-academic disciplinary issues, and campus life on a daily basis.
• Chairs the CARES Team (Community Assessment Response and Evaluation of Students), to address students of concern across the university.
• Stays professionally engaged (LICSPA, NASPA, ACPA, etc.) and abreast of applicable regulations, trends, laws, regulations, policies, procedures, and programs.
• Actively supports and attends division and University-wide events.
• Serves on University committees and performs related duties as required.
• Serves as Deputy Title IX Coordinator.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:
• Master's degree in a related field (e.g., student affairs, education, and counseling) required with progressively responsible administrative experience in higher education, behavioral or student crisis management, leadership and community development, student conduct, multicultural affairs, programming and advocacy, and or a combined experience in related fields.
• Minimum seven years of prior related experience.
• Excellent organizational and administrative skills, including budget management; working knowledge of student leadership development theories; experience with assessment, training, and excellent problem-solving, written, and oral communication skills.
• Ability to work ethically and effectively to manage conflicts and crisis situations; and possess a collegial interpersonal style with demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within the department and with numerous University stakeholder groups and community members.
• Knowledge of student development/leadership theories and current best practices, and the ability to apply them appropriately.
• Demonstrated commitment to the holistic development of diverse student populations.
• Commitment to professional development through advanced degree, collegiate level teaching experience, and/or involvement in regional or national professional organizations.
• Proven record of successful mentoring of student leaders and student groups.
• Strong interpersonal, conflict resolution, management, and creative problem-solving skills.
• Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of an administrative team and with individuals and groups with a variety of identities, ethnicities, cultures, sexual orientations, gender identities, and backgrounds.
• Proven skills in cultural development, inclusion initiatives, team building, and crisis management.
• Demonstrated effectiveness as a supervisor, providing feedback, coaching, and devising performance improvement plans that exemplify best practices in supervision.
• Skilled and experienced in leading facets of change management.
• Experience in investigating and adjudicating student conduct cases, especially with regard to holding individual students and groups accountable.
• Extensive experience as a trainer and presenter in professional staff workshops and in-service programs.
• Prior experience managing multifaceted budgets.
• Excellent interpersonal, teaching/presenting, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to live-on campus in an unfurnished housing Hofstra provides to fulfill on-call and crisis management responsibilities.
• Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends as required.
• Willingness to be present and visible on campus after hours and on weekends, as dictated by a vibrant campus life.
• Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, social media platforms, desktop publishing and web content management system software.
• Ability to learn new software as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Prior working experience with Ellucian Banner, Access, Blackboard, Maxient, Everfi, and Campus Labs.
• Excellent human relations skills.
• Ability to manage multiple projects and responsibilities.
• Perform highly detailed work.
• Strong quantitative and analytical skills.
• Work well in a fast paced, deadline driven environment.
• Comfort with appropriate technologies.
