Research Specialist
The Research Specialist will work in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine and will interface with members of this and other labs in the Division. The position will utilize a solid foundation in basic laboratory principles and techniques associated with molecular and cell biology to perform the required tasks. A qualified applicant should be capable of exercising independent judgment while participating in the planning of experiments and evaluating results. When needed, he or she will also provide training to other individuals who may be assigned to the laboratory on a regular or temporary basis.
The Research Specialist will work in a laboratory which focuses on the mechanisms of airspace maintenance and injury with a focus on COPD and genetic matrix disorders. The Research Specialist will utilize a solid foundation in basic laboratory techniques to maintain laboratory equipment, reagent inventories, and assist in routine experimental work like plasmid preparations, and cell culture. The work will also involve preparing and maintaining cell lines stably with overexpressed or knockdowned target genes. The Research Specialist has experience with cell handling and is capable of exercising independent judgement while participating in the planning of experiments and evaluating and interpreting results.
Specific duties & responsibilities:
The Research Specialist will participate in planning studies and evaluating test results, utilizing detailed knowledge of research laboratory procedures and practices, involving primary cells, cultured cell lines and animal models. These lab-based duties will include:

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
