Job Location:

Department :

Center for Human Health and the Environment (CHHE)

About the Department:

CHHE serves as the nexus of Environmental Health Sciences (EHS) research at NC State by providing focus, resources, and interdisciplinary leadership for research that improves human health locally, nationally, and globally. CHHE brings together 60 investigators from 15 departments and six colleges at NC State, as well as investigators from the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, North Carolina Central University and the NC Department of Health and Human Services. The vision of the CHHE is to be a global leader in EHS along the continuum from genes to populations by building on NC State’s unique research strengths and resources in quantitative biology, -omics and analytical technologies, and diverse model organisms, as well as its emerging strength in human population science. CHHE is an NIEHS Environmental Health Sciences Core Center, one of 26 across the US, and is supported by a NIEHS P30 grant. CHHE is also supported, in part, by two training grants, one in environmental bioinformatics and one in molecular toxicology, the latter is one of the longest funded NIEHS training grants. NC State is also home to the Superfund Center for Environmental Human Health Effects of PFAS (NIEHS P42), GenX Exposure Study, Newborn Epigenetics Study (NEST), Southeastern Liver Health Study (STRIVE), and the State Climate Office.

CHHE investigators are supported by four cores that increase research impact and translational capacity. The Systems Technologies Core provides cutting-edge technologies involving genomics, metabolomics, metallomics, and proteomics. The Comparative Pathology Core provides pathologic phenotypic assessment of the many model organisms used by members. The Integrative Health Science Facility Core facilitates bidirectional translation between basic science and public health outcomes by providing data science analysis and visualization, support for analysis of human populations and multi-omic studies as well as population-based study expertise. The Community Engagement Core fosters relationships between CHHE and affected communities in NC which leads to collaborative interactions to enhance EHS literacy and health. Additionally, a Career Development Program for early- and mid-career investigators is coordinated with a robust Pilot Project Program that supports collaborative and multidisciplinary EHS projects to enhance the research success of our members.

Organization

NC State: Think and Do

NC State was founded with a purpose: to create economic, societal and intellectual prosperity for the people of North Carolina and the country. We began as a land-grant institution teaching the agricultural and mechanical arts. Today, we're a pre-eminent research enterprise with 12 colleges excelling in all major academic fields.

NC State studentsOur 34,000 high-performing students take what they learn in the classroom and apply it in the real world by conducting research, working in internships and co-ops, and performing acts of world-changing service. That experiential education ensures that they leave here ready to lead the workforce. NC State's 13:1 student-faculty ratio is one of the reasons why we're the best college for your money in North Carolina (Money) and the No. 5 best value among public universities nationally (U.S. News & World Report).

Overcoming Challenges, Improving Lives

NC State is one of only two universities in the nation leading two National Science Foundation Engineering Research Centers — one developing wearable, self-powered health monitors, and the other researching smart-grid technology. We’re also leading interdisciplinary efforts to curb nuclear proliferation, help farmers confront climate change and build a new American manufacturing sector.

Our research doesn't just get published in a journal or sit on a shelf; it makes an impact. NC State is No. 6 nationwide in commercialization agreements based on university research, and we're No. 2 among universities without a medical school. Our Cooperative Extension Service provides research-based information to citizens in all 100 North Carolina counties. In addition, our industrial extension unit — Industry Expansion Solutions — has created an economic benefit for the state's manufacturers averaging $149 million per year since 2005.

Bright Minds Creating a Bold Future

NC State’s 9,000 faculty and staff are world leaders in their fields, bridging the divides between academic disciplines and training high-caliber students to meet tomorrow’s challenges. NC State students won two Goldwater scholarships, five Fulbright scholarships, one Churchill scholarship and a record-breaking 25 National Science Foundation graduate research fellowships in the 2016-2017 academic year. In addition, 25 faculty are members of the National Academies.
