Position Summary

We invite applications for a full-time non-tenure-track visiting faculty position, as Visiting Professor of the Practice. The position is for the 2022-2023 academic year and begins on September 1, 2022. The appointment will be made for a nine-month position only.

This position will work within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in a teaching capacity. In addition, this position will have the exciting opportunity to develop curriculum for an expanded systems engineering program and will report to the Chair of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.

The position of Professor of the Practice in Systems Engineering is responsible for proposing a new systems engineering curriculum, preparing a business case for a potential program, and teaching three systems engineering courses during the academic year. Approximately 50% of the candidates time will be dedicated to systems engineering curriculum and business case development. The remainder of the time will be spent on teaching, with an anticipated course load of three courses for the three quarters. We seek exceptional faculty who engage students inside and outside the classroom, deliver active and hands-on learning experiences; and authentically support our diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) mission.

Essential Functions

  • Coordinate the development of a proposed systems engineering masters program through collaboration with Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty, RSECS leadership, community stakeholders, and potential corporate partners.
  • Write a business case to support the proposed systems engineering program.
  • Teach courses, seminars, and workshops.
  • Interface with the community at large, including working with community stakeholders and potential corporate partners to understand needs for a systems engineering program.
  • Provide service to the department, including mentoring students, performing course assessments, and attending faculty meetings.
  • Provide service to the school, the university, and the profession.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • An interest in developing a systems engineering program.
  • Demonstrated experience creating business cases or academic program proposals.
  • A passion for teaching and experience teaching Systems Engineering courses.
  • Required Qualifications

  • Masters degree in systems engineering, electrical engineering, or related field.
  • Teaching experience in a college or university setting.
  • 17+ years of relevant industry experience with nationally recognized achievements.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and a teamwork mindset.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or terminal degree in systems engineering, electrical engineering, or related field.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with culturally responsive teaching methods and/or pedagogies to effectively engage broadly diverse student populations.
  • Experience with the engineering design process.
  • Experience in mentoring and student advising.

    The salary grade for the position is UC.

    Salary Range:
    The salary range for this position is $95,000 - $106,000.

    The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
