General Description:

The Physical Science Laboratory Assistant will prepare for and supervise student activities in the chemistry and physics area of the Physical Science Center and in related group labs. An employee in this position is at risk for occupational exposure to hazardous materials and/or human blood and other potentially infectious material as a result of the performance of the employee’s duties.

Minimum Education/Experience:

Must have an earned Associate’s degree

Must include:

Chemistry I and II, Organic Chemistry I
AND
Algebra based Physics I and II with Organic Chemistry II
OR
Calculus based Physics I and II

Required Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

The ability to orally communicate, using the English language, laboratory procedures and theoretical concepts to an individual student or group of students.

Visual ability, corrected, to observe and detect signs of hazards and obstacles that may cause injury to students and staff in the Physical Science Labs.

Ability to lift and/or carry equipment weighing 50 pounds with or without the use of auxiliary aids.

The ability to use basic algebra, trigonometry, etc. to solve elementary chemistry and physics problems (i.e., molarity, normality, percentages by weight or volume, etc.).

Knowledge of and experience with laboratory equipment, materials and procedures.

Knowledge of safety procedures for storing, handling and disposing of hazardous chemicals.

Ability and willingness to work a flexible work schedule including daytime, evening and weekend hours including up to three nights per week as assigned.

Positive human relations skills.

Work Hours:

Possible work hours will fall between 8:00 AM to 10:30 PM Monday through Thursday, Friday 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM. Saturday 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Variation may occur from semester to semester.

Job Duties (Duties Assignment Statement):

Essential Functions

Supervise and assist students in individual and group lab exercises.

Answer questions concerning computer software and other resource materials available in the Physical Science Center.

Administer and grade laboratory quizzes which are integral parts of laboratories or pre-lab activities.

Prepare materials and assemble, disassemble, clean and store equipment needed for individual and group laboratory experiments.

Prepare laboratory solutions and standard and special reagents including the necessary calculations to prepare solutions of specified molarities, normalities or percentage composition.

Given the lab procedures, materials and instructions from the Physical Science Center Supervisor and/or the course instructor, conduct and explain the various experiments conducted in the chemistry, physics and physical science laboratories.

Understand, obey and enforce all safety and health regulations applicable in a science laboratory. This will include, but not be limited to, State and Federal regulations concerning the handling of hazardous chemicals.

Make minor instrument adjustments and explain to students the operation of all equipment used in the laboratories including balances, meters, spectrophotometer, IR, GC, etc.

Supervise work study personnel in the maintenance of an orderly, clean environment in the laboratory areas as well as in the lab preparation and stock room areas.

Effectively interact and communicate with students, faculty and staff while performing duties.
Assist students with Chemistry and Physics questions in regards to their class work.

Fulfill student and institutional needs by maintaining a flexible work schedule assigned by the Physical Science Center Supervisor.

Marginal Functions

Maintain attendance records in the Physical Science Center.

Assist personnel in the maintenance of an orderly, clean environment in the laboratory areas as well as in the lab preparation and stock room areas.

Identify and request in a timely manner supplies needed in the chemistry, physics and physical science laboratories.

With the aid of professors, the Physical Science Center Supervisor and other lab personnel, keep records of supplies, equipment and materials used or maintained to support laboratory activities.

Abide by the policies and procedures published in the Board of Regents Policies and College Policies & Procedures

Contribute to a safe educational & working environment.

Adhere to established safety and health procedures and practices for the purpose of providing injury and illness prevention for self and others.

Complete quarterly health and safety training pursuant to OCCC’s established safety and health procedures and practices.

Participate in all applicable OCCC emergency, evacuation, shelter in place drills, and be prepared to take action and assist others in taking appropriate action should a health or safety emergency occur.
