Job Description

The Assistant Athletic Director: Athletic Communications is responsible for all aspects of sports information and media relations for the Athletic Department. The position is required to abide by the rules and regulations established by Texas A&M University-San Antonio (A&M-San Antonio), the Red River Athletics Conference (RRAC), and the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). In addition, this person must be committed to the education Mission of the University. Currently enrolling approximately 6,700 students, Texas A&M University-San Antonio is one of the fastest-growing universities in the state.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and directs a comprehensive program of athletics coverage which focuses on both competitive and non-competitive activities and includes information on student-athletes and teams.

  • Provides information to both electronic and print media outlets; develops publications for all sports programs.

  • Designs, writes, and oversees the production of printed promotional materials including catalogs, brochures, flyers, and program and media guides.

  • Develops and maintains an effective presence on the web and with the most appropriate forms of new media.

  • Writes and edits promotional materials including press releases, newsletters, programs, and brochures; gathers and compiles statistical information.

  • Responds to requests for information from media personnel and the public; distributes promotional materials, including flyers, brochures, and press kits; disseminates information via the appropriate media.

  • Gathers and maintains statistical data, records, and history on student-athletes.

  • When appropriate nominates student-athletes and staff for RRAC, NAIA, and other organizational academic and athletic awards.

  • Travels with university athletic teams as needed; provides information to representatives of the opponent's sports information office about the team, including updating starting lineups.

  • Develops and maintains close contact with the media and those who cover the Red River Athletic Conference or local sports.

  • Plans, coordinates, and manages special events including the possibility for an athletics banquet

  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Two (2) years of related experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in sports journalism, sports administration, public relations, or related field from a four-year, regionally accredited university.

  • Minimum of (4) years of relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

  • Skill in the use of personal computers and related software applications.

  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports.

  • Skill in organizing resources and establishing priorities.

  • Ability to use independent judgment and to gather, manage and impart information to the media and various other internal and external audiences.

  • Ability to create, compose, and edit written materials.

  • Knowledge of printing procedures and requirements.

  • Ability to coordinate and organize meetings and/or special events.

  • Ability to foster a cooperative work environment.

  • Employee development and performance management skills.

  • Ability to work effectively with diverse populations.

  • Media relations skills.

  • Compliance with all NAIA, RRAC, A&M University System and University rules and regulations is required in this position.
