Job Description:

The College of Business and Public Management (CBPM) seeks to hire a part-time, non-instructional adjunct faculty member to provide various news writing/publicity services on the La Verne Campus.
The workload and compensation will be comparable to teaching a course with 160 hours in a semester, roughly about 10 hours a week. The assignment can be renewed each semester based on satisfactory performance and up to 3 consecutive assignments may be made per year (Fall, Spring, and Summer). Most work can be performed remotely and/or in the evenings and weekends, although some work will need to be performed in person on the La Verne campus, roughly 20-30% of the 10 hours per week during the daytime work hours. Only selected candidates will be contacted. Once the hiring process is completed, the selected adjunct faculty member may begin to work as early as mid-August. All positions require a master’s degree. The University of La Verne graduates with a master’s degree are encouraged to apply. The News Writer is responsible for finding, writing, editing, and distributing messages around the University of La Verne College of Business and Public Management tailored to a variety of stakeholders including the university, the community, alumni, potential students, parents, and employers.

The News Writer is responsible for communicating about research, scholarship, projects, curriculum, students, alumni, news about ranking and competitions, and other topics of interest with a particular focus on conveying the real-world relevance and impact of our faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends.

The News Writer must be an outstanding writer and editor-who can accurately translate information into engaging stories appropriate for non-specialists and other readers of various backgrounds. The News Writer must be able to read and grasp the basics of peer-reviewed research in management, marketing, economics, accounting, finance, industrial-organizational psychology, and other business-related disciplines. The News Writer must be able to formulate relevant follow-up questions about published or ongoing research in order to write engaging stories understandable to non-specialists. This will be a part-time job requiring 10 hours per week.
Job Duties

Formulate and keep a regular meeting schedule in order to cultivate relationships with faculty, students, staff, department heads, program chairs, deans, alumni, Advisory Board members, and community members to keep abreast of their projects, research, new developments, upcoming awards, honors, publications, new and favorite studies recommended by (not necessarily written by) CBPM faculty and staff, and other activities.Follow CBPM faculty, students, staff, department heads, program chairs, deans, alumni, Advisory Board members, and community members for leads on stories of interest to the CBPM community. Write, edit, and publish at least one engaging story per week to be posted on the CBPM blog and other social and traditional media outlets.Monitor University of La Verne communications for news, information sessions, recruiting events, and other items of interest, and re-post them to the CBPM blog in a timely manner. Monitor ProfNet, HARO, and other media queries as appropriate and respond, when appropriate, with pitches about CBPM faculty experts.Convey stories and other information as appropriate in a timely manner to Enrollment Management Office of Strategic Communications.Collect stories into an end-of-year annual report for CBPM.Attend meetings of the CBPM Website Committee Other duties as assigned.______________________________________________________________________________________________________

Required Qualifications:

Demonstrated ability to translate complex or nuanced topics in business and related fields into engaging language understandable to non-specialists.

  • The ability to read and understand research in business-related areas
  • The ability to understand and explain statistical concepts
  • The ability to understand and explain the scientific method
Technical skills appropriate to the position
  • Exceptional written communication skills in Standard American English
  • Ability to use Google Scholar, ProfNet, Esploro, HARO, and other tools for leads and publication opportunities
  • Ability to work with online tools and social media sites such as WordPress, HubSpot, HootSuite, IFTTT, Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn, etc.
Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines
  • Sound judgment and critical thinking skills
  • Ability to work harmoniously with others
