SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION:

The Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI) is Stanford University's interdisciplinary research and teaching institute on international policy and international affairs. FSI is home to more than fifty faculty scholars and hundreds of other researchers and students—undergraduates, graduate and post-doctoral—who share an academic interest in international policy questions and challenges. FSI sponsors research and teaching programs, convenes conferences and seminars and hosts lectures by leading scholars and policymakers to advance understanding of the most pressing international policy challenges facing the world today. POSITION SUMMARY:

The Audio-Visual Media Manager supports FSI and university events, whether as the primary technician or as the supervisor of contracted technicians, and as a manager solving escalated problems, and partners with the Bechtel Conference Center (BCC) and Events Manager to run with great success one of the premier event spaces on campus. Reporting to the FSI Associate Director for Administration and Finance, the position holder contributes to FSI's long-term strategic technical plan and designs and manages a complex variety of conferencing facilities to support academic activities on campus and abroad.

Primarily, the Audio-Visual Media Manager operates and maintains in excellent condition, including knowing when to upgrade, the Bechtel Conference Center's integrated Audio-Visual system used for dynamic event production. As important as having technical skills and troubleshooting abilities, the position holder must be a team player and collegial, taking an active role in working alongside the Bechtel Conference Center (BCC) and Events Manager to improve BCC business operations and share some event management-related administrative and budget responsibilities.

The Audio-Visual Media Manager is proactive and has excellent communication and customer service skills and interfaces directly with clients to understand their technical needs. The position holder tests, cares for, and replaces as needed and within budget all technical equipment and ensures ongoing documentation of AV system components and schematics. Operates the BCC AV system during events. For each event in the BCC, provides specialized video conferencing tools and technical set ups as needed, including production of hybrid events with virtual and in-person panelists and attendees and livestreaming to remote audiences. Captures video and provides postproduction services.

The BCC is currently upgrading its in-house AV system. The Audio-Visual Media Manager would play a lead role in managing this exciting project to upgrade the technical space they would ultimately operate and maintain.

Outside of Bechtel Conference Center technical and operational duties, provides technical support and training for other managers of smaller conference rooms within FSI and, as time permits, may support faculty videography and other digital media projects.

CORE DUTIES:
  • Play an active role in technical aspect of event planning, advising, and partnering with clients on complex events requiring extensive technical knowledge within time and cost constraints.
  • Partner with the Bechtel Conference Center (BCC) and Events Manager to run and improve operational and administrative aspects of the BCC, including event management processes and procedures to ensure best possible client experience and sensible business practices.
  • Plan, research, prepare and produce professional-quality digital media for instruction, promotional programs, location and studio programs, live video conferences and webcasts, live-on-tape studio, and/or other communicative purposes for both internal and external audiences.
  • Consult with and help faculty and staff to incorporate digital media into research projects, presentations, course design and curricula in support of student learning or departmental communication goals.
  • Manage all aspects of capturing, recording, and transmitting of all digital media productions, video and/or images for internal and external clients in the event environment.
  • May contribute to development of digital media goals, objectives, policies, procedures, and/or manage budget for area of responsibility.
  • May serve as internal project leader and provide guidance and training to other staff.
  • Take independent ownership of large, complex digital media projects. Perform the full range of the digital media project cycle: initiating, planning, producing, refinement, delivery, and archiving.
  • Develop and market digital services, and manage all aspects of capturing, recording, and transmitting of all digital media productions, video and/or images to internal and external clients. Provide outreach within and across departments of effective applications of digital media.
  • Create and oversee the creation of original visual content and produce high impact visual storytelling. Manage process from conception, to production, to completion across a diverse array of communications channels and media utilizing best practice standards that foster photographic and video excellence.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and seven years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Expert level technical experience using digital media equipment, video creation, editing software, and/or motion graphics and effects software.
  • Comprehensive knowledge in production techniques including videography, compression and file delivery and other production formats.
  • Extensive knowledge of all aspects of professional quality productions, including field and studio camera, lighting, sound and editing,
  • Proven savvy and understanding of online video environment and online distribution.
  • Ability to independently manage a variety of simultaneous projects within tight deadlines, excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience leading and training others.
  • Ability to communicate and articulate digital media products and options and adapt to alternatives when appropriate.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, mature judgment, and diplomacy required to interact effectively with and provide customer service to a broad audience, including high-level executives and faculty.
  • Ability to work independently as well as effectively in a collaborative team environment.
  • Experience planning, coordinating, and executing archival digitization projects.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Hands-on experience with Audio-Visual system in control room setting for event production.
  • Familiarity with Stanford events and technical spaces.
  • Interest in international policy and international affairs.


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks
  • Frequently stand/walk, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, and reach/work above shoulders.
  • Occasionally sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat.
  • Visual acuity including color vision.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class license.


WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Occasionally work on weekends, evenings, holidays, and flexible shifts.
