LICENSED VOCATIONAL NURSE I

Scope of Job:
To provide assistance to the professional nursing staff and physicians at the clinical area assigned. Responsible for assisting in the treatment and care of patients not requiring the specialization and/or skills of a professional nurse.

Description of Duties:
• Assists the physician in the clinics as appropriate for patient’s needs to include ensuring provider’s orders are completed in appropriate manner.
• Prepares rooms for clinic, prepares patient’s charts and patients to be seen by the provider.
• Collects samples for laboratory examination and performs routine laboratory tests on samples.
• Administers vaccines and screening tests under supervision as recommended by the CDC (Center for Disease Control) guidelines and clinical area policies.
• Follows up on all persons with reactions to vaccines and uses the appropriate precautions including the methods of administration and knowledge of side effects for each vaccine.
• Assists registered nurses and providers with health education, treatments, and procedures.
• Completes appropriate paperwork.
• Ensures adequate levels of supplies and equipment are maintained for diagnostic and treatment procedures.
• Maintains confidentiality in all matters.
• Participates as a member of an interprofessional health care team.
• Inspects incoming medication for and provides proper storage.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received:
General supervision from assigned supervisor.

Supervision Given:
May provide minimal supervision to assigned staff.

Required Education:
High school graduation or equivalent. Graduate of an accredited Licensed Vocational Nurse program from an approved school of Nursing.

Preferred Education:
None.

Licenses/Certifications:
Current Texas Licensure as a Licensed Vocational Nurse. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification course accredited by the American Heart Association

Required Experience:
One (1) year of experience in vocational nursing.

Preferred Experience:
None.

Equipment:
Use of standard office equipment and equipment related to vocational nursing. Telemedicine and related equipment.

Working Conditions:
Needs to be able to successfully perform all required duties. Usual office or clinical ambulatory patient care facility conditions. Some evening and /or weekend work may be required.

Other:
Professionalism, Tact, diplomacy, discretion, and confidentiality of medical information required in all matters. Possible exposure to combustible materials. Possible exposure to blood-borne pathogens.

A New University with a Long History

The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley was created by the Texas Legislature in 2013 in a historic move that brings together the resources and assets of UT Brownsville and UT Pan American and, for the first time, makes it possible for residents of the Rio Grande Valley to benefit from the Permanent University Fund—a public endowment contributing support to the University of Texas System and the Texas A&M University System.

 

Our new university will also be home to a School of Medicine and will transform Texas and the nation by becoming a leader in student success, teaching, research, and health care. UTRGV will enroll its first class in the fall of 2015, and the School of Medicine will open in 2016.

 

UT Brownsville and UT Pan American

The shared history of The University of Texas Pan American and The University of Texas at Brownsville goes back to 1927, when Edinburg College was founded. In 1973, Pan American opened a second campus in Brownsville, which later became an independent institution of The University of Texas System in 1991. Over the years, the missions and the identities of these great institutions have continually evolved to serve the communities of the Rio Grande Valley.

Now, the evolution and connection between these two institutions is coming full circle as UT Brownsville and UT Pan American are being established as a single, new university and medical school, with a single, new identity—The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.
