South Puget Sound Community College (SPSCC) seeks highly motivated and qualified individuals for the position of Instruction & Classroom Support Technician 2 in the Art department.

The instructional tech supports the college mission for success in post-secondary academic transfer and workforce education that responds to the needs of the South Sound region by supporting teaching and learning in the arts studios (2-D, ceramics, digital) by:
  • Ensuring that faculty and students have the necessary materials for demonstration and studio projects.
  • Maintaining equipment and facilities through regular servicing, inventory oversight, procurement, space and equipment oversight, and student support during open studio time (including but not limited to printing presses, pottery wheels, kilns, and digital media equipment).
  • Supporting student success by explaining and demonstrating studio techniques and assisting students with assignments during open studio and lab times.
  • Supporting the efforts of the arts to maintain safe and sustainable studios and labs.
  • Supporting communities of art students, faculty, staff, and artists within the studio spaces.
  • Supporting community outreach for the arts by serving on the Gallery Committee, promoting art classes and events, and representing the College in arts communities.

  • What You'll Do

    Support teaching and learning in clay studio.

    • Loading, firing, and maintaining all kilns and maintain all kiln-related accessories in ceramics.
    • Formulating, mixing, testing, and maintaining all glazes for ceramics classes.
    • Managing the recycling of used clay to prevent waste and save space in ceramics lab
    • Maintaining equipment.
    Support teaching and learning in open studio and lab times for ceramics, printmaking, photography, film, and other studio courses as appropriate.
    • Arranging the logistics of open studio and lab sessions each term, with input from faculty.
    • Overseeing, assisting, and encouraging students in the open studio and lab sessions.
    • Communicating studio and lab policies to faculty, staff and students.
    • Adjusting and/or developing studio and lab policies when needed.
    Support teaching and learning in the art studios and labs by ensuring that they are supplied with the necessary materials and that the equipment is well maintained and functioning.
    • Coordinating with faculty to obtain necessary supplies each quarter.
    • Coordinating with IT, Facilities, and division administration for maintenance of space, equipment, and materials.
    • Maintaining inventories of equipment and materials.
    • Working with business office, receiving, and division administration to procure materials and equipment.
    • Coordinate with budget managers and division administration to track studio and lab budgets.
    Support safe, efficient operations of the studios and labs.
    • Organizing art studios/classrooms before start of each quarter, and when necessary.
    • Performing minor repairs on studio equipment and assisting faculty in managing more involved repairs.
    • Working with faculty to implement safety procedures for studios/classrooms.
    • Facilitating safe storage and disposal of hazardous wastes.
    • Working with faculty and Facilities on a continual basis to maintain a safe studio/classroom environment.
    • Assisting faculty with studio management through ongoing communication and planning, including helping to create visual aids or guides for students.
    • Helping train and assign duties to work study students as necessary.
    Support the Art department in outreach to the college and community.
    • Serving on Art Gallery Committee and participating in Gallery activities, in
    • Participating in Gallery activities, including displaying art on campus and organizing the student art exhibition.
    • Representing the College and supporting community outreach activities for the arts.
    • Demonstrate multicultural competence (including an awareness and understanding of historically disadvantaged populations) and create an educational and work environment that affirms a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
    • Support the college’s mission by creating a work environment of mutual respect and fairness, while encouraging creative and critical thinking.
    • Contribute to the appreciation of diversity and foster a climate of multicultural understanding.




    Qualifications You Possess

    Preferred Qualifications:

    • Experience in various art disciplines and techniques.
    • Ability to communicate effectively.
    • Willingness and ability to collaborate with faculty and staff.
    • Ability to use own judgment when needed.
    • Ability to remain focused and organized while performing many different tasks.
    • Ability to maintain good relationships with students, faculty, and staff in a culturally diverse work environment.
    • First Aid certification.
    • Knowledge of and experience using computer equipment used in art programs.
    • Collaborative -- The ability to work in culturally diverse groups toward a common goal by involving, including and valuing others.
    • Respect -- An appreciation for those who are different from one's self.
    • Demonstrated experience or participation with persons from diverse backgrounds such as sexual orientation, racial, ethnic, religious, linguistic, gender, age, socioeconomic, physical and learning abilities, and a commitment to an inclusive and equitable working/learning environment.

    Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment

    • This position may perform in multiple settings, primarily in a studio setting and will operate specialized equipment in the clay and 2D studios as well as standard office equipment such as a personal computer, calculator, etc. The ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and accommodate numerous interruptions while performing multiple tasks is essential. The position also requires manual dexterity and mobility and may require moving boxes weighing approximately 60 pounds.
