Senior Writing ConsultantRegular, Full-Time, Market Range 07Undergraduate Research & FellowshipsUniversity of Tennessee, KnoxvilleUndergraduate Research & Fellowships is responsible for UT’s centralized undergraduate research programming and nationally competitive fellowships student support services. URF's work is grounded in a commitment to access and motivated by the belief that undergraduate research and the pursuit of competitive fellowships can activate, for all students, purposeful exploration through which they can develop key skills, cultivate strengths, and expand, clarify, and strategically pursue their goals and unique vision for improving their communities, from the campus to the global. The Senior Writing Consultant with operate under the supervision of the Assistant Director for Fellowships. In this capacity, the Senior Writing Consultant will serve as URF's lead in providing students with timely 1-on-1 consults and intensive feedback on application materials to develop compelling/authentic personal statements and refined project statements and abstracts. The Senior Writing Consultant will also build out URF's strategic application-writing support infrastructure. Specifically, with URF leadership, the Senior Writing Consultant will: build out, assess, refine, and maintain a student-centered, scalable fellowships and external research award application-writing infrastructure (guidance documents, Canvas sites, process workflows, writing workshops/retreats) and advance URF leadership's efforts to refine and streamline campus Fulbright process/resources; serve as URF’s lead in providing students with timely 1-on-1 consults and tailored feedback on application materials; together with the AD and Director, strengthen and formalize relevant strategic partnerships outside DSS, such as with the Writing Center; and provide miscellaneous student services, especially during peak fellowships deadline seasons, such as through written candidate evaluations, campus interviews, and mock interviews.
Qualifications
Position ResponsibilitiesWriting Support Infrastructure -With Fellowships AD and Director, build upon URF's existing resources to create/refine accessible (user-friendly, scaffolded) pedagogical resources—tailored to each major fellowship in URFs purview—to advise student-applicants and advance their efforts to develop competitive materials that effectively blend personal and scholarly writing and reflect best practices in fellowships advising (NAFA) -With the Faculty Director, create accessible guidance resources to support student-applicants for external research experiences (e.g., NSF REUs) and that reflect best practices in undergraduate research advising (CUR) -Manage existing Canvas sites and create new ones to house these resources—from working with OIT to create new course shells; to adding/uploading materials and modules and, as needed, archiving old materials; to enrolling and, as needed, deactivating students; and monitoring for submitted drafts to ensure efficient workflow with team members -With the Assistant Director, design, co-lead/lead, and assess tailored writing workshops and retreats, with a focus on access-focused 'pipeline' awards such as the Gilman, CLS, and NSF REUs, where URF has the opportunity to strategically increase and diversify its reach/impact, as well as on relevant competitive gap-year programs (e.g., JET, EPIK). -Together with Fellowships AD and Director, refine and streamline campus Fulbright process -Work with URF leadership to expand applicant draft support through strategic partnership with Writing Center and explore possibilities with using peer reviewers; provide cross-training as appropriate, including with URF staffDirect 1-on-1 Application Support-Work 1-on-1 with onboarded fellowships/award applicants to help them develop a preliminary narrative arc that honors students' stories and strategically incorporates and justifies their award candidacy; offer/provide follow-up meetings as needed concerning structural revisions (argumentation, organization, development) -Provide timely written feedback to in-progress applicants on personal and project statements, short-answer essays, and abstracts over multiple rounds of drafts, including structural revisions and lower-order revisions (grammar, spelling, sentence structure, citations) -Communicate with applicants to develop customized timeline with goals and draft deadlines designed to retain students within lengthy and rigorous application processes -Maintain detailed recordsMiscellaneous Support and Service-Provide miscellaneous especially during peak fellowships deadline seasons (e.g., written candidate evaluations, campus interviews, mock interviews) -Contribute to URF reports as needed -Support periodic office eventsKnowledge, Skills, and Abilities
