Job Details

The Psychology Department at Macalester College invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position in neuroscience, area of specialty open (e.g., behavioral, systems, sensory; human or non-human), to begin Fall 2023. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in Psychology or Neuroscience by the time of appointment and will be expected to teach an intermediate course in Behavioral Neuroscience as well as other courses in their area of expertise that support the Psychology and Neuroscience majors and complement current faculty offerings. The teaching load is 4-5 courses per year depending on how many courses include a lab. The successful candidate will play a vital role in the Neuroscience Program by serving on the Neuroscience Steering Committee and providing research experiences and advising for Neuroscience majors. New faculty receive generous start-up funds to equip their research lab. Department and College funds are available to support undergraduate research assistants as well as other research needs.

At Macalester College, diversity, equity, and inclusion are central to our educational mission and values. We are committed to the institutional change required for visioning and realizing a more equitable and socially just college and society. Strong candidates will have experience and vision regarding teaching and mentorship of students of multiple and diverse backgrounds with attention to structural barriers that limit access to educational opportunities. Thus, we ask that applicants submit a statement (no more than two pages) that discusses past and potential contributions to diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives in their teaching, advising and mentorship, curriculum, scholarship, service, and community and professional engagement. In addition, applicants should submit a cover letter; curriculum vitae; statement of teaching interests, philosophy, and effectiveness; and statement of research interests and plans. These materials, along with reprints/preprints of published work and three letters of recommendation, should be submitted to https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/22042. Review of applications will begin on October 1, 2022, and continue until the position is filled. Questions about the position should be addressed to the chair of the Psychology Department, Darcy Burgund (dburgund@macalester.edu).

Macalester College is a highly selective, private liberal arts college located in Saint Paul, Minnesota, on the ancestral homeland of the Dakota people who were forcibly exiled because of aggressive and persistent settler colonialism.

The Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area has a population of approximately three million people and is home to numerous colleges and universities, including the University of Minnesota. Macalester’s diverse student body comprises over 2000 undergraduates from all 50 states and the District of Columbia and 99 countries. The College maintains a longstanding commitment to academic excellence with a special emphasis on internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society. As an Equal Opportunity employer supportive of affirmative efforts to achieve diversity among its faculty, Macalester College strongly encourages applications from members of underrepresented groups.

Statement of Purpose and Belief

At Macalester College we believe that education is a fundamentally transforming experience. As a community of learners, the possibilities for this personal, social, and intellectual transformation extend to us all. We affirm the importance of the intellectual growth of the students, staff and faculty through individual and collaborative endeavor. We believe that this can best be achieved through an environment that values the diverse cultures of our world and recognizes our responsibility to provide a supportive and respectful environment for students, staff and faculty of all cultures and backgrounds.

We expect students to develop a broad understanding of the liberal arts while they are at Macalester. Students should follow a primary course of study in order to acquire an understanding of disciplinary theory and methodology; they should be able to apply their understanding of theories to address problems in the larger community. Students should develop the ability to use information and communication resources effectively, be adept at critical, analytical and logical thinking, and express themselves well in both oral and written forms. Finally, students should be prepared to take responsibility for their personal, social and intellectual choices.

We believe that the benefit of the educational experience at Macalester is the development of individuals who make informed judgments and interpretations of the broader world around them and choose actions or beliefs for which they are willing to be held accountable. We expect them to develop the ability to seek and use knowledge and experience in contexts that challenge and inform their suppositions about the world. We are committed to helping students grow intellectually and personally within an environment that models and promotes academic excellence and ethical behavior. The education a student begins at Macalester provides the basis for continuous transformation through learning and service.
