Responsibilities

Reporting directly to the AVP of Development, the Director of Development, Campaign Manager will be responsible for devising and implementing strategies that maximize fundraising effectiveness and campaign operations. This role will be particularly important in the success of the upcoming campaign and in achieving annual fundraising goals. With a focus on creating ownership in donors and increasing the future pipeline of contributors, the Director of Development, Campaign Manager will oversee the day-to-day work of the Donor Strategy Team (Donor Relations and Prospect Research) in order to maximize one-to-one donor relationships and increase collaboration with the Macalester Fund team.  

 

Campaign Operations: 

In partnership with Advancement partners, serves as campaign manager in overseeing operations of the comprehensive campaign. Leads efforts to facilitate peer to peer fundraising, serves on the internal and external campaign committees in leadership capacity, and works with other Advancement team members to create and implement the campaign plan. Leads the campaign preparation efforts, including implementing internal readiness recommendations, defining key campaign metrics, and defining campaign report and communication needs. Manages campaign budget and financial models. Uses systems, processes, and reporting to inform decision making and optimize outcomes ensuring adequate campaign donor pipeline. In collaboration with Advancement colleagues and already-established groups and committees, develops plans to engage the campus community in the campaign.

 

Donor Strategy and Communications: 

Maximizes relationship building and fundraising efforts by aligning Donor Research and Relations work across Advancement and with campus partners. Ensures that the philanthropic giving and planned giving teams are supported in their role as front line fundraisers including templates, gift agreements, and portfolio optimization. Oversees research and prospect identification strategy including corporate and foundation work and trustee recruitment. Develops communication strategies that strengthen relationships and enhance the overall donor experience. These strategies may include discovery communications that help identify potential donors for qualification, segmentation strategies for group outreach (special initiatives, affinity groups, pooled fund donors, giving societies), and stewardship and recognition efforts. Oversees Donor Strategy (Donor Relations and Research) team members.

 

Revenue Production: 

Instrumental in achieving year over year fundraising growth at Macalester College. In partnership with colleagues in the Macalester Fund, develops a mid (medium) level giving strategy, focusing on the conversion of annual, major, and planned giving donors. Opportunity to manage a portfolio of ~15 individual relationships through meaningful stewardship and cultivation. Provides oversight of campaign plans and volunteer committee solicitation to increase donor base and awareness with revenue accountability.

 

Campus Partnerships and Fund Management: 

Oversees named and restricted funds in partnership with Donor Relations team members, Business Services, Provost Office and Financial Aid. Oversees and participates in policy decisions as they relate to gift acceptance, naming, gift designations, award management, and gift agreements. Works with gift officers and campus partners to finalize gift designations. Addresses donor questions and concerns related to fund administration, gift acknowledgments, and report requirements.  Works closely with Advancement colleagues and campus partners, especially Marketing and Communications, to execute communications across channels. Provides consultation around special donor situations within Development.

Infuses DEI best practices including community-centric fundraising approaches in both the work and the culture of the team. Engages in and promotes Macalester’s culture of diversity and inclusion, encompassing individuals of any heritage, identity, status, or orientation.

Qualifications

Director of Development, Campaign Manager candidates should demonstrate the following:

  • 8+ years of experience within fundraising including multi-million dollar campaigns and major gifts and in working with volunteer committees, leadership teams and cross departmental teams.
  • Supervisory experience or demonstrated ability to lead teams. 
  • Experience in donor relations, research and communications.
  • Strong organizational and communication skills, exceptional attention to detail, as well as good judgment and discretion.
  • Ability to evaluate and assess reports and data and translate that knowledge into strategy/tactics to grow the fundraising and campaign pipeline.
  • A commitment to creating inclusive work environments that embrace diverse backgrounds, values, and points of view.
  • Ability to travel nationally, and, possibly, internationally, in support of campaign and portfolio efforts, 1-2 trips a year anticipated. An authentic appreciation for liberal arts education and the college’s mission.
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred. Experience substitutes for preferred degree. 

 

Salary: Starting salary for this position is $105,000+ commensurate with experience.
