Penn Engineering Quantum Information Science and Engineering (QISE) Cluster Faculty Positions
Location: Philadelphia, PA
Open Date: Oct 25, 2021
Deadline:
The School of Engineering and Applied Science at the University of Pennsylvania invites applications for multiple, open-rank, tenure-line faculty positions from individuals with exceptional promise for, or proven record of research achievement in quantum information science & engineering (QISE). This schoolwide QISE cluster search seeks to assemble a group of faculty who will assume positions of international leadership in their fields of study, collaborating with each other and existing Penn faculty to tackle problems spanning from basic science to applications.
QISE is a transdisciplinary field that draws from physics and classical information science, aiming to exploit fundamental principles of quantum mechanics for creating, processing, transmitting, and sensing quantum information. With key application areas in computing, secure communication, sensing, data science, and medicine, QISE spans all engineering disciplines. As quantum technologies become a practical reality, academic institutions will continue to play an essential role in advancing research, conceiving new ideas, and educating the future's quantum innovators.
Researchers working in all areas of QISE are encouraged to apply. As part of our strategic plan to expand QISE research at Penn, we are particularly interested in candidates who will enhance our research strengths in the following areas:
Materials for QISE - Synthesis, characterization, and optimization of materials for the creation, storage, manipulation, or transduction of quantum information.
Quantum devices - Realization of new device platforms such as qubit registers, quantum sensors, and quantum interconnects, including integration with classical electronics and photonics architectures.
Quantum systems - Theory of quantum protocols; architectures for intermediate-scale and large-scale quantum processors; efficient transpilation of quantum algorithms.
QISE applications - Optimization of quantum sensors for materials science, chemistry, and medicine, especially in connection with Penn's commitment to Precision Engineering for Health; use of quantum computers for quantum simulation or data science.
This cluster search will be administered at the school level, with search committee representation from all departments. Prospective candidates should indicate their preferred department and tailor their application accordingly.

Vision
As engines of knowledge and new ideas, universities have the unique potential to define the future rather than be defined by it; to pioneer change rather than merely manage it. To do so requires a plan both visionary and pragmatic. The Penn Compact 2022 motivates community members to innovate, be radically inclusive, and positively impact their local, national, and global communities.
Penn’s fundamental priorities — increasing access, integrating knowledge and engaging locally, nationally and globally — are supported by the three core values that make us uniquely Penn: inclusion, innovation, and impact.
