Job Summary
Columbus State University has an opening for a University Police Officer in the University Police Department. This is a participatory commissioned position providing general law enforcement and service related duties for a Board of Regents Institution. Work involves knowledge of federal, state, university and departmental laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures. Must demonstrate the ability to exercise independent judgment and decision making within limits prescribed by laws, rules, regulations, policies, and procedures

Responsibilities
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Patrols assigned area and university facilities
  • Prevents and detects criminal and traffic law violations
  • Provides support services such as locking and unlocking facilities
  • Provides motorist assistance such as vehicle jump starts and vehicle unlocking
  • Arrests violators for violations of criminal and traffic laws
  • Provides assistance to visitors such as giving directions or escorts
  • Reports hazardous situations or conditions of university facilities
  • Appears in court to testify in cases

Physical Demands
  • Must be able to push disabled motor vehicles out of roadways.
  • May be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds without help.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. Visual acuity to perceive reactions to officer's actions.
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Work Environment
  • Morning and evening hours required.
  • Exposure to infection and/or contagious disease when working with the public is possible.
  • May be required to maintain traffic control points for extended periods of time in all types of weather.
  • Shall be physically capable of qualifying with assigned weapon(s), in both day and night, in all types of weather.
  • Shall be emotionally and physically capable of controlling crowds during confrontations, without being overcome by stress.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Required Qualifications
Minimum qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, a valid driver's license, and no felony convictions or crimes of moral turpitude. The selected candidate should possess a Georgia P.O.S.T. certification as a peace officer, or the ability to obtain certification; have knowledge of criminal and traffic laws of Georgia; have the ability to make sounds decisions under pressure; possess strong working knowledge of departmenal policies and procedures (SOP); have a strong command of laws pertaining to search and seizure and investigative techniques; and have a proficiency in the use of firearms and related law enforcement equipment. They must also be able to obtain advanced training and aducation as needed.

Proposed Salary
The annualized salary for this position is $45,000 and includes full benefits.

Columbus State University Police Officer Selection Process:

The selection process for police officers is intended to identify those candidates that are best suited for a rewarding and challenging career in law enforcement. The mission of the Columbus State University Police Department is in part to safeguard the life, liberty and property of all people who may come into contact with the agency. The hiring process helps ensure that the selected candidate best reflects the core values of the Columbus State University Police Department. Each candidate for the position of police officer will be required to submit to the following steps:

1. Initial application submission using the Columbus State University's online employment site.
2. Interview with command staff.
3. Personal History Booklet completed.
4. Background investigation to include a fingerprint check through FBI and GBI.
5. Computer Voice Stress Examination (information provided from application and PHB).
6. Interview with Chief of Police.
7. Conditional offer of employment.
8. Pre-employment physical, pre-employment drug screen and pre-employment psychological.
9. Probationary appointment for six months following basic mandate certification.

Successful completion of a criminal background investigation and legal authorization to work in the US prior to employment is required.
