The Department of Surgery at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre is inviting applications for a permanent full-time position of a neurosurgeon and scientist with expertise in functional and image-guided neurosurgery. The effective date of this appointment is flexible, tentatively aiming for July 1, 2024-5.

We seek a full-time faculty surgeon with fellowship training and expertise in advanced image-guided approaches, including but not limited to stereotactic functional neurosurgery, radiosurgery and/or advanced neuromodulation approaches. This is an 80% research and 20% clinical position. The successful candidate will possess a strong track record and a PhD, preferably in the area of neuromodulation to complement our strong Brain Sciences program. The strategic priority of Sunnybrook and it’s research institute is the advancement of image-guided brain therapeutics, and the successful candidate will have a proven track-record in this area and will be able to advance the academic mission. In addition, expertise in other related image-guided therapeutic approaches, including stereotactic radiosurgery, will be considered a strong asset and complement existing strengths and collaborations in our program. Evidence of excellence in research and teaching is required.

The candidate will be responsible for developing a translational research program in areas related to focused ultrasound enhanced drug delivery in alignment with Sunnybrook’s strategic plan. Clinically, the successful candidate will spend approximately 20% of their time providing comprehensive neurosurgical care in a teaching environment with learners ranging from medical students to fellows. As a member of the Department of Surgery and the University of Toronto, the candidate is expected to participate in education of learners at all levels.

The successful candidate should have advanced training and skills in image-guided brain therapeutics, such as stereotactic radiosurgery and functional neurosurgery through formal fellowship training and graduate level training in a relevant area of research that is aligned with Sunnybrook Research Institute’s programs or platforms in evaluative clinical sciences, biological sciences or the physical sciences (https://sunnybrook.ca/research). Our division is building upon current strong collegial and supportive team work of all neurosurgeons. Therefore, being a team player, collaborator and caring is an essential attribute for successful candidate.

The candidate must be eligible for appointment at the rank of Assistant/Associate/ Full Professor at the University of Toronto and for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, as well as licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.

The Division of Neurosurgery at Sunnybrook hospital is a rich academic center known for strength in bringing innovative technology to clinical practice and leading multi-center clinical trials. The Division has established subspecialty practice in vascular, oncology/skull base, spine and functional neurosurgery and is recognized as a world leader in clinical applications of focused ultrasound. Our close collaboration with clinical neuroscience program across the Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program, allows a rich environment for the development of world leading work in direct to brain interventions for a wide range of brain disease.
