This position is being offered for an initial fixed-term of 8 months with the possibility of extension based on certain factors including funding. The anticipated start date for this position is August 1, 2022.

Hybrid and remote work arrangements will be considered.

Description:

The core functions of this temporary position will be to work closely with the director of the Stanford Humanitarian Program (SHP) at Stanford Law School: (a) to oversee and carry out substantial research projects, including managing sponsored research projects related to SHP's focus on international humanitarian law and humanitarian challenges, with an emphasis on projects that engage real-world partners on projects with real-world applications; and (b) to develop and implement a strategic plan for the institutional development of SHP, including expanding SHP's activities and placing it on a more secure institutional and financial footing.

Develop and manage research projects by conducting research activities:

The Executive Director (ED) will serve as a leader on SHP sponsored research projects. Research related activities will include:

(a) engaging in complex original research and preparing reports and publications presenting that research;

(b) supervising the work of affiliated and student researchers on complex research projects;

(c) assisting in the substantive design and execution of sponsored research projects, including serving as a liaison to sponsors and partner organizations; and

(d) assisting with the administration of sponsored research projects, including supporting Principal Investigators in pursuing internal approval of new sponsored research projects and proper implementation of University protocols on grant administration with respect to approved and funded projects.

Identify, recommend and implement opportunities for new research / institutional development:

The ED will work to promote SHP's institutional development, including contributing to and informing on strategic program/entity planning and related funding and financial sustainability, through activities including:

(a) developing and pursuing a strategy for expanding SHP's current research and program work, including developing a framework for fostering SHP's connections with actors seeking assistance in addressing challenges related to international humanitarian law and humanitarian issues in conflict zones;

(b) creating a development strategy, including working to identify individual and institutional sources of funding (including additional sponsored research projects) to expand SHP's program work;

(c) developing, promoting, and maintaining SHP's online presence;

(d) deepening institutional connection with other programs at Stanford, including identifying opportunities for collaboration, such as co-sponsoring conferences and collaborating on research projects;

(e) deepening SHP's presence among and outreach to practitioners working on international humanitarian law and humanitarian issues, including governments, intergovernmental organizations, and nongovernmental organizations.

Minimum Education and Experience Required

Advanced degree, J.D., required along with three years of relevant experience. Experience as both a practitioner and a researcher working on international humanitarian law and humanitarian issues in conflict zones, strongly preferred.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
• Excellent oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
• Ability to oversee and direct staff.
• Basic knowledge of managing budgets and developing financial plans.

Preferred Experience:

• Participation as a researcher on policy-relevant research projects and scholarly publications on international humanitarian law and/or humanitarian issues in conflict zones;
• Expertise regarding the design and operation of humanitarian notification systems in conflict settings; prior experience researching the relationship between social media content moderation policies and the risk of escalation of violent political conflict;
• Prior experience researching the potential for introducing digital information (including information collected via an HNS) in war crimes trials; prior experience managing student research assistants;
• Prior experience managing organizational budgets and administrative policies;
• Prior experience developing and maintaining an internet and social presence.
