In the fall of 2020, with the generous support of the John L. Nau Foundation and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the University of Virginia’s Democracy Initiative and College of Arts & Sciences launched a multi-year faculty hiring project. Over three years, we will hire a dozen or more new faculty members at all ranks in the departments of Classics, History, and Philosophy, Politics, and elsewhere. Across all the searches, the Departments seek to appoint scholars whose primary research is focused on the study of the history and principles of democracy and who will contribute in significant ways to the intellectual direction and projects of the John L. Nau III Lab on the History and Principles of Democracy at UVA.
As part of this hiring program, with the support of the John L. Nau Foundation, the Corcoran Department of History at the University of Virginia is pleased to invite applications for a tenure-track or tenured Assistant or Associate Professor of History whose primary research is focused upon the history of medieval representative cultures, CE 1000 - 1400.
Possible areas of study might include: assembly politics and the construction of political consensus; the development of formal consultative assemblies and attendant authority; the representative structures of religious communities; political thought; the history of guilds and the formation of corporations; notions of tolerance and inclusivity. Geographic focus is Europe and the Mediterranean region.
In addition to holding a tenure-track position in the Corcoran Department of History as a tenure home, the successful applicant will join the Democracy Initiative’s core lab on the history, principles, and philosophy of democracy.
Candidates must demonstrate excellence in scholarly research. They must also be committed to outstanding teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels. In every case, candidates would be expected to make connections either temporal, thematic or geographic to the work and interests of colleagues in the Department of History and the University of Virginia’s wider community of pre-modern scholars.
The mission of the Democracy Initiative is to promote excellence in research, teaching, and public engagement on democracy at a global scale by bringing together a diverse range of scholars, government leaders, and practitioners to study and advance the prospects of democracy around the world. The Democracy Initiative is interdisciplinary and supports and advances the work of faculty, as well as graduate and undergraduate students, in the humanities, the arts, and the social sciences. To that end, the Initiative supports a variety of labs built on models of collaborative work. The Democracy Labs consist of a series of three-year, rotating labs on various topics, connected by the work of the John Nau III History and Principles of Democracy Lab (the Nau Core Lab), an interdisciplinary hub of research, teaching, and outreach. In addition to holding an appointments in their home departments, the new faculty member hired will also be a member of the John L. Nau III Lab on the History and Principles of Democracy.
• Contribute to both the home department or program and the Democracy Initiative.
• Contribute to disciplines and areas of focus.
• Contribute through teaching, leading working groups or research projects, and/or public and community engagement projects.
Candidate Profile: Applicants should have the qualifications necessary for appointment at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor within their discipline. For Assistant Professors, PhD must be in hand by August 2023. Associate Professors must be three years beyond the PhD.
