Assistant/Associate Professor Position of Clinical Small Animal Surgery (Academic Clinician track)

Location:
Philadelphia, PA
Open Date:
Jul 7, 2022
Description:

The Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania invites applications for a faculty position in Small Animal Surgery with dual emphasis and focus on soft tissue and orthopedic surgery.  This position will be in the Academic Clinician track at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor.

Academic Clinicians spend the majority of their effort in clinical service and clinical teaching endeavors. The position will focus on patient care, education of veterinary students, training of rotating interns and surgery residents, and supervision of veterinary nurses. Potential for collaborative research abounds, but advancement within this faculty track does not include a research requirement. Eighty per cent (80%) of the surgeon’s time will be devoted to clinical service and clinical teaching and will be evenly split between the small animal soft tissue and orthopedic surgery services, with the remaining time dedicated to citizenship, professional development, and administrative duties.  In addition to working in a dynamic hospital setting with excellent support staff, the advantages of the position include an exciting intellectual environment with outstanding residents and faculty boarded in surgery, dentistry, critical care, anesthesiology, radiology, oncology, and internal medicine.

The Section of Surgery is currently staffed by 5 soft tissue and 3 orthopedic faculty, along with 7 surgery residents. The hospital has state-of-the-art operating rooms including a minimally invasive surgery suite. Complementing this is our diagnostic imaging center (including MRI, CT, ultrasound, and stationary fluoroscopy), a rehabilitation medicine program, state-of-the-art emergency and intensive care unit, and a comprehensive cancer care service. Together these facilities and programs make Penn a center for clinical innovation and excellence.

Qualifications:

Applicants must have a DVM/VMD or equivalent degree and have residency training in veterinary surgery with board certification or be board-eligible. Candidates with specific expertise in Minimally Invasive Surgery (laparoscopy, thoracoscopy, arthroscopy) are encouraged to apply.

Application Instructions:

Applications will be accepted until August 18, 2022 . Interested applicants should apply electronically to http://apply.interfolio.com.  The system will prompt you to attach a letter of intent including a statement of personal goals, curriculum vitae, and the names, addresses, and contact information for three references. The letters should be directed to Dr. Dan Morris, Professor of Dermatology and Chair of the Search Committee, Department of Clinical Sciences and Advanced Medicine, School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, 3900 Delancey Street, Philadelphia, PA 19104-6010, domorris@upenn.edu.  Questions regarding the position should be sent to Peggy Alfarano, Search Coordinator alfarano@upenn.edu
